thought about 'Digital Sovereignty' being a flawed term. #DigitalSovereignty frames digital infrastructure as something to claim sovereignty over, in the same tradition as kings (sovereigns) laid claim to land and resources in the old days, and states and capitalists continue to do so today. Digital sovereignty allows for, and empowers a mindset of "Proprietary Big Tech is fine, as long as it's *our* Big Tech, with offices in our country". No two entities may claim sovereignty over the same piece of land (or digital infra) at the same time. Sovereignty is a quality of exclusivity. Therefore it downplays and undermines #cooperation. Sovereignty is a framework of authority, which includes authority over others. A slave owner claims 'bodily sovereignty' over 'their' slaves, as an employer claims sovereignty over 'their' workers. #Autonomy is a framework of #emancipation, #liberation and #selfDetermination, and can't include authority over others. Slaves revolt to win their (bodily) autonomy; employees take collective ownership of their workplace to win their autonomy. While an entity can claim sovereignty (exclusive authority) over something which is not inherently 'theirs' to lord over; any entity can only claim autonomy over that which is inherently theirs. In my mind for example, @coopcloud facilitates anyone to win digital autonomy; but was specifically organised to make it difficult for any entity to claim digital sovereignty (exclusive control) over the tooling and recipes. This interpretation of 'digital sovereignty' may not be what everyone has in front of mind. The issue is that digital sovereignty is a framing which very easily may be (and to some degree has been) co-opted and used to perpetuate capitalist, statist and other authoritarian power structures; rather than breaking those power structures and replacing them with #emancipatory relations and structures. This talk https://media.ccc.de/v/gpn24-467-di-days-as-anarchist-practice-anarchist-practices-for-di-days resonates with me. I haven't read it, but @alineblankertz and @malteengeler supposedly grapple with how 'digital sovereignty' plays into nationalist ideologies, and propose the alternative term #digitalSolidarity in their book https://www.structural-integrity.eu/our-book-is-out-digital-solidarity-on-overcoming-capitalist-technology/ #anarchism
