Listening to the #SearchEngine podcast episode where they talk about ending the #forkiverse for the following reasons:
1. they ran out of storage space ($$$)
2. hosts didn't use it (yet another feed?)
3. russian propaganda hacker bots
imo the key thing they said is they would have kept it going if not for strike 3. they said @jaz@toot.wales says they let an innocuous base account join which enabled tons of future accounts join w/o authorization.
I want to talk about this...

at the end of the podcast, they talk to @evan@cosocial.ca but they don't discuss this possibly very serious security issue with mastodon. that approving one bad account breaks the entire approval process. or maybe they or I misunderstand the problem. my server is small but I haven't experienced it. I see bots but don't approve them and they remain pending and don't post. but let's go beyond this confusion and talk about bots and unwanted content and replies...
