@mattmay@mstdn.social A friend and I were throwing around ideas to start business in 1996—you know the kind of things you do in lazy summers when you're in highschool. We wanted to start a credit card company. We threw out ideas like x.com and xcreditcard.com. We knew nothing about branding. We looked for the domains. Both of them were available. x.com had just come on the market. $200 for 10 years. Then we got fucked by cancer. My friend was diagnosed next day. We ended up dropping it.

@mattmay@mstdn.social My friend died 6 months later; I didn't have the time or the financial support for a venture by myself. The domain was gone in a week. We were going to start with an affiliate program, which would then turn into a credit card provider. We'd eventually become a bank, starting as a loan broker followed up by becoming a depository. We were aiming for what would now be termed a neobank.
