  • I checked the filings after @failedLyndonLaRouchite put them up. The plaintiffs are the Multicultural Business Coalition, hundreds of small NYC grocers, mostly minority-owned and the National Supermarket Association, independent operators. Not the chains. Which makes this a harder story than the one I posted.

  • @zer0billionaires@mastodon.social some perspective here; it sounds like the lawsuit was brought by small local food stores https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/mamdani-hit-fed-lawsuit-over-164100656.html https://www.courthousenews.com/nyc-grocers-sue-city-over-subsidized-municipal-grocery-stores-plan/ https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/nyc-grocery-stores-antitrust.pdf

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social Capitalists are pissed off that the free and open market created a better alternative to their operating model?

  • @zer0billionaires@mastodon.social Well, great news guys; these were opened in food deserts where you didn't want to open your stores, so you don't need to compete.

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social These are the same folks that say that the government is inefficient. Laughable.

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social bookmark it and throw it back in their faces when the same people say they want to privatize government services to "lower taxes." The commercial sector can't do it cheaper than the government without doing it worse because they necessarily have to add a surcharge to give to their investors as "profit."

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social Can someone help me understand: - the government can’t do anything as efficiently as a business - the government is too inexpensive and business can’t compete.

  • @zer0billionaires@mastodon.social I really can't think of any supermarket that would NOT sue their government for establishing an extremely unfair competition. (Supposed that the Mamdani shops would have been accessible publicly ofc. Here in Switzerland we have certain stores with cheaper prices that only poor people get access to, which works absolutely fine.) We don't need cheaper groceries, we need to redistribute wealth! The actual "American thing" is how incredibly bad they still are in implementing the simple principle of a welfare state.

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social If only there was a subsequent pro bono, fully public involved law firm operated class action against the grocery stores for trying to interfere in affordable living as a counter suit

@zer0billionaires@mastodon.social @StillIRise1963@mastodon.world This is asinine. I mean even besides the headline that we’re suing to keep groceries not cheap. Of course the government can do something this trivial for a small region. It literally doesn’t matter. It will matter at scale, and specifically when we approach the tipping point of 50% state/corp. There is no point in suing now, except to be a whiny asshole about it and to actually lose more money in the process.
