Between torrents, Usenet and the Internet Archive, most western media is findable. And for the really oddball stuff, try looking for a dvd and ripping it.

Dont forget about SoulSeek! So much amazing stuff even easier than torrents in a way if you use Nicotine or something. The client is the search engine

true, but if you want high quality releases, it can get very tricky. I finally finished DLing one torrent after almost 3 years about a month ago.

I did exactly this. Generally find everything on Usenet, but I’ve bought several DVDs of things I couldn’t find. Most recently some really niche Frank Lloyd Wright documentaries 😆

The really niche stuff is usually easy to find if you know where and how to look. Sometimes hiding in plain sight (like the name in kanji/romaji with weird letters like ō vs oe/ou). Rarely had the issue of not finding something but tbf, my taste is very vanilla and not particularly niche.
