@fediversereport @Mastodon powerful insights as always. I agree with almost everything you say, but I'll add a few thoughts: "But the lived experience of most Mastodon users is not King’s million small places with curated front doors. It is a single shared social space," I counter that each instance's community management applies a custodial effect to the federated timeline, shepherding this individuality, an overlapping Venn diagram of "space" a little bit mine, a little bit my community's.

@fediversereport@mastodon.social @Mastodon@mastodon.social Separately, I will posit that 95% of people using a Fediverse account are blissfully unaware of the thread. What "space" are they in? You and I are very aware of this thread, but most are not. They are in their own space where this thread is likely not representative of their views, or their cares, or their desires. It seems holistic and representative of "the Mastodon community" because it happened in /our/ Fediverse, but does it truly reflect a community value?

@jaz@toot.wales @fediversereport@mastodon.social @Mastodon@mastodon.social I don't think I've ever looked at the federated timeline on my instance. (I have on one other instance, sfba.social.) Fundamentally the UI doesn't encourage it, doesn't foreground it, etc. Genuinely love that you're experimenting with doing that, and if sfba.social followed a similar lead I'd instance-hop in a second.
