@amras@town.friendmaterial.lgbt I am technical but I help non-technical people with technology in a public library. The biggest thing people have trouble with are - how passwords work and what are passkeys (and why you sometimes need to get notifications or other texts to log in and sometimes not) - cloud storage vs. device storage and how to tell what is going where and what is filling up - are cheap cell phone plans as good as expensive ones and how do you get one I've met two linux users in my 23 years at this job.

@jessamyn@glammr.us @amras@town.friendmaterial.lgbt I can confirm this. I have seen people think that the "remember me" checkbox on login pages means they don't have to remember the password. They don't understand what's a browser and what's a webpage. The fact that browsers also ask "remember this password" confuses them.

  • @jessamyn@glammr.us Solidarity with library work! <3 The password question strikes close to home. I know that signup processes can be difficult and I've seen friends react with fear at the thought of a new account or installing a new app. Of the people you've helped - would you say they are worried about security, or privacy? Or do they just want to know how to log in?
