@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a - I am posting from the damp, chilly #VancouverIsland where it feels like baked squash weather, although the sun just peaked out for the first time today. A1b - Not in the slightest bit weird - Your care, your rules. A picture is a good way to engage your care providers, to start the conversation about **your** goals. You may not get 100% agreement, but you can certainly clarify your priorities.

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A1: I'm posting from home in Rochester Minnesota. Posting a photo of you and your bike as motivation for healing and recovery is a great idea. One caveat is to let your body heal sufficiently before pushing hard. I once pushed too hard and too quickly to get back on my bike after surgery. As a result I had a relapse and further surgery was required to correct. The second time I was more patient and the results were much better.

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a. Northern Virginia as usual. A1b. Generally speaking, for a pre-surgery check-in, I'd focus on making sure you write "this side" and "not this side" with a Sharpie in the appropriate places. But, sure, keep bringing up the bike! When I broke my ankle a year ago, I was constantly pushing to be allowed back on the bike. It didn't make much difference -- they were not going to let me back on until the bones had set -- but they certainly heard about it. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.socialA1 #biken Nite Not Stuck but reveling in Central Illinois. (OK, I"m a bit tired.) 1b: communication matters!! The bike is a huge part of you *and* your health, physical and mental. A picture really is worth a thousand words and it being "weird" means there's more chance they pay attention.

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a #BikeNite from near Boston, today I biked in to Boston to pick up a part for my middle kid's bike, so much traffic, glad I wasn't driving. A1b maybe not weird. If you bike enough that it affects you (developed legs, low resting HR) that's good for them to know. And also, "really, 3000 miles per year, not that fast, but usually work up a sweat".

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a Posting from Beaverton, OR today. Or possibly Oz. It is very windy. A1b Define "weird"? What's weird to one person is normal to another, and vice versa. Do whatever floats your boat or totes your goat. #bikeNite

@kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a. I am in Oakland, CA today and not traveling! A1b. I don't think it's weird, but even if it's weird, if it helps make your stay and recovery better, then I'd definitely do it! Also, it's probably a good idea for the care team know what your expectations are? Not sure if it'd change how they'd approach things, but maybe? Either way, I hope it goes smoothly and that you are able to be back on the bike soon. And that that terrible intersection is improved. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1: Campbelltown, Australia. Lazy morning, technically I have got out of bed. A1b: not weird. Especially when dealing with your daily nurses who may not understand why you're so weirdly fixated on mobility and strength rather than keeping your good looks. Friend got knocked off, smashed her face up a bit and struggled to persuade the plastic surgeon that the proper focus was on repairing her hands to she could rock climb, the face was secondary. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1b again: when I broke my humerus and couldn't ride for fitness it was only when I got the right physio that I could do an hour a day on a proper exercise bike. "normal" hospital exercise bikes are not built to cope with 300+ watts for an hour. She knew what that meant and helped find suitable gear. I suspect but don't know that she discussed this with the surgeon because the second round of fixation went a lot better. Tell *everyone*, not just one Dr. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1: in Las Vegas for shoots so no biking today. For 1B I say go for it! If anything it’s probably something nice to look forward to. Once when I got hit by a car and awoke in the hospital I wondered if they got my bike and they put it in the ambulance with me. I was so grateful! Hope you heal up quickly!! 🧡 #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1: posting from the Hudson Valley Yesterday morning we had a bike bus to an elementary school, and a group ride in the evening. I’ll report fully on that in A8. Today I rode past a different elementary school and found their bike rack quite full. Bike culture is catching on quickly! #BikeBus #bikeculture #bikenite

Hope you recover soon!

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social @ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a. I'm posting from sunny Los Angeles California in the USA. A1b. First of all my sympathy for the accident. That is not okay. I recently had an elective surgery and was told to stay off the bike for two weeks. Then on a follow up appointment it became clear that the doctor thought I was putting on lycra and riding a century every weekend, which was very different from my 6 mile round trip commute where I routinely stop to take pictures of random street signs and flowers. He amended his instructions to specify strenuous rides. So it wouldn't hurt to bring the picture and have a conversation. #bikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social #bikenite A1: G'day from Melbourne, Australia, where it's Grand Final Day (footy) and also it's been drizzling all day so it should be a super soggy one. A1b: Probably irrelevant to your surgeon but having a concrete goal can be a really important part of recovery so definitely discuss with your PT etc (but remember they might recommend you spend a bit of time walking or doing gym exercise before you're ready for the stresses of cycling).

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a Connected via high speed wires from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. A1b I get these surveys from my provider that ask if anyone from my care team asked me about my health goals and... no one every really does! So yes, you should share what your goals are, as it may inform the care you are given... and it may help humanize you to folks who see tons of patients all the time. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a. Santa Clara, CA. Wondering how many more Saturdays I can sit outside in shorts catching up on #BikeNite before it gets too cold. A1b. Do it. When I spent more than three cumulative months in the hospital (cancer not an accident). I frequently brought up what I was doing prior to my diagnosis, and asking how long until I could do those things again. I don’t know that it made a difference to the medical staff, but I like to think it made me more human to them. I would say that other than the initial intake, where the Dr. was a bit dismissive of my previous 3 and 6 month plans. Everyone one was supportive. I think the lower down the power structure they were the more supportive they were. I’ve often wondered if the kid who cleaned my room made it through the electrician apprenticeship program. We both had big dreams. But telling them who you are, not letting them define you is always a good thing.

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a: Usual. North of Seattle, Washington State, Cascadia. Far _later_ than usual, but yesterday turned into a fucken day. So. A1b: Do whatever you need to to get doctors to actually pay attention to your shit. For reals. I had to list codeine as an allergen to get people to stop proscribing that shit to me and even then it hasn't always worked. (I have _extremely_ rare "paranoia" and "hallucinations" reactions to codeine. I am I think the reason "hallucinations" is in the literature at all, because it sure wasn't there before it reproed with me.) #BikeNite
