@tao@mathstodon.xyz Here's another AI-math meme.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz I’m quite disappointed this wasn’t presented at the ICM😔

@tao@mathstodon.xyz That's pretty funny. I think there should be one more podium level for Scholze and Clausen (300 page foundational exposition, or some such).

@tao@mathstodon.xyz ngl it's very weird to see you post this after all of your cheerleading of AI generated proofs on here

@tao@mathstodon.xyz These are very good thoughts, and the same line of thinking could and should be applied in other fields. It essentially boils down to the question of what makes humans different from machines.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz I think AI is helpful in constructing counter examples to a conjecture just by virtue of a machine being able to try lots of different possibilities very quickly. However, I think AI has a long way to go math wise. At this point.AI is a tool for research mathematicians. It’s a way to explore the mathematical landscape. Try this. Try that. What happens if we do this. It very much needs a human at the helm to guide it. AI hasn’t been able to solve the Riemann hypothesis or solve any of the Millennium prizes. AI is just using up more and more resources (electricity and water) for incremental improvements.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz a lot of the success stories of AI in math seem to largely revolve around either resolving a conjecture by counterexample or problems which are numerical. Here is where AI excels. It’s ability to try many different candidate solutions very quickly. It’s a machine and its computing ability far exceeds what a human can do. Problems which can’t be solved by counterexample or don’t have a numerical or combinatorial flavor it doesn’t seem to do very well. I think AI’s capability in math is overhyped.

@tao@mathstodon.xyz I thought the point is the others don't have medals? (I.e., the meme should have them without medals)
