At it's most basic, self-regulation is using cognitive, emotional, behavioural, or sensory strategies to change our behaviour, prevent distress, and work towards our goals.
Self-regulation isn't about shutting down our emotions, thoughts, or behaviours; It's about steering them so that we can continue to function and avoid crashing out

If an analogy helps, imagine sailing a boat through a narrow channel. The boat is being influenced by the waves, wind, currents, other boat traffic etc., similar to how we are influenced by our thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviour, as well as those of others Running the boat aground on either side would be a crisis and prevent us from accomplishing our goals, and to avoid crisis we constantly adjust to stay between the shores.
