If an analogy helps, imagine sailing a boat through a narrow channel. The boat is being influenced by the waves, wind, currents, other boat traffic etc., similar to how we are influenced by our thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviour, as well as those of others Running the boat aground on either side would be a crisis and prevent us from accomplishing our goals, and to avoid crisis we constantly adjust to stay between the shores.

  • This is self-regulation, constantly adjusting our approach to thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviour to continue moving forward and away from crisis. Co-regulation, then, is self-regulating collaboratively with a crew. This could be with one person leading it from the outside, such as a parent or therapist facilitating a regulation activity, or it could a group working together to regulate each other. Essentially, co-regulation is body doubling, but for regulation
