Social media bans exist to prevent young people from organizing on climate change, Palestine, and LGBTQIA+ rights.

  • @evan@cosocial.ca Every censorship regime in American history was marketed as protection. Trump's hero President Jackson ordered mail opened while he encouraged local regimes at ports to inspect for books to "protect" from abolitionists. Trump's blueprint President Wilson ordered wires tapped to "protect" the war from labor organizers (after Germany bombed American industry while he "America First"-ed his way along the wrong side). A youth ban is simply American infrastructure in the shadow of history. Whoever holds it decides who gets protected from whom. Facebook infamously facilitated Rohingya genocide by claiming they were protecting freedom of speech (themselves really). "A person with knowledge of Facebook’s [2015] Myanmar operations was decidedly more direct than [Facebook vice president of public policy] Allen, calling the roll out of the [security] initiative 'pretty fucking stupid.'" https://www.flyingpenguin.com/can-facebooks-cso-be-held-liable-for-atrocity-crimes/

  • @evan@cosocial.ca yes, but that’s a narrow view. It’s like saying marijuana was outlawed to stop war protests. While that’s not untrue they didn’t stop enforcing it after Vietnam was done. It’s to stop you from upsetting the status quo. It is to stop you from organizing but it’s also to cultivate your views going forward. Social media is your news now, they want you to get it only from them.

@evan@cosocial.ca Twenty years ago, sure. Now its just a pathway to Borg-i-fication, fascism edition. The youth bans and age-verification systems are going in because parents treat every networked screen, mic and trinket as delightful—they get the kids out of the way. This is all about parental neglect coming due, and TPTB never ever mentioning parental responsibility makes it all the more conspicuous, IMO, because they don't want anything to ruin the emergence of total surveillance culture.
