I really wish we could get a secure replacement for email already, one that’s incompatible and not just bolting on and becoming an optional feature by necessity. And SMS. And phone networks. And credit card networks. And

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt I would like to exchange this world for a less defective model.

  • @emilyyoung@tech.lgbt Matrix is can do most of those, but its development feels so slow that it’s kinda missing its window. The best we can hope for right now is for governments to allow us to continue using encryption at all. O_o

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt the distributet network charakter of email is quite good and resilient to big tech / state actors - that said : do you heard of @delta@chaos.social #deltachat - its technicaly using many of the email infrastructure of the world but bolding end 2 end encryption on top. its #Foss #opensource and #comunity driven. we suggest this quite often , in many regards it tops #signal as a messanger - because its really decentral.

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt I think the bigger issue is not that we don't have a replacement, simply that no one can get everyone to agree to adopt a single replacement for it. Signal or even RCS is a secure replacement to SMS, but as long as they rely on centralized servers controlled by single companies, they won't be a SMS replacement. I imagine the best way to force a new standard would be something like EU mandating it, forcing companies to all cooperate in adopting it, then it may spread from there.

  • @emilyyoung@tech.lgbt My conclusion from what I know is that making federated service encryption compatible is quite hard. It works for something like mastodon because there is no encryption involved. Anyone has any examples that are as good a user experience? I guess RCS could be one but I am not sure if it is as secure as Signal.

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt I was searching through my open tabs from sessions past, and came across this from DARPA called RACE, Resilient Anonymous Communication for Everyone: https://www.darpa.mil/research/programs/resilient-anonymous-communication A few swings from DARPA might mean something to some people... At this point, I trust my government as much as I trust the Grinch around a holiday roast.

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt PAYMENT CARRRDS!! 😡 "Here is the identity of my bank account, underpaid cashier. Take whatever amount will settle us up, my good sir. And be sure to tip the Visa network a couple percent for placing that fine 'V' sticker on your door."
