Anyone else deeply get why people want to cognitively offload everything they can to AI? The world is So Much right now. We're all juggling a thousand tasks and chores. Why is my tablet not charging? Why wasn't my prescription filled yesterday? Gotta pay my quarterly estimated taxes, find a new trimmer for the parts of the lawn the mower can't reach, make a dentist appointment cause I'm grinding my teeth at night. New technologies and productivity gains never lead to real ease in our lives. Capitalism greedily gobbles up the difference. It sells us new tools "oh this will make things easier" and we do it because we need it, we're hovering on the edge of burn out, but the end result is we drift further from each other. We replace the resilience of relationships with the fragility of a tool, an app. The problem isn't people. Please don't shame folks for trying to get by. Shame only adds to the overwhelm and sense of isolation. It perpetuates the system, it doesn't dismantle it.

@shauna@social.coop Some of these people realize how sucks the rest of us into their dependency on bigdata surveillance. And from what I can tell they do not give a flying fuck about it and some even enjoy delivering ultimatums for using them.

@shauna@social.coop offloading everything you can to AI is like putting your hands up and closing your eyes when you're behind the wheel. If people complain bitterly about the outcome, they aren't trying to shame the driver. They can plainly see that the driver's culpable behavior was shameful. Making excuses for it is just another shame on top.

  • @shauna@social.coop "For most of human history, you bought a thing, and it was yours, and it was FINISHED. That word is nearly extinct. Nothing you own is finished. Everything exists in a state of permanent incompletion, permanently needing. Your phone needs updates, needs charging, needs storage cleared, needs passwords rotated. Your apps need permissions reviewed, terms accepted, preferences re-configured after every update..." https://www.terrygodier.com/the-last-quiet-thing/ascii

@shauna@social.coop it's legitimately hard to parse which actions cause direct harm and which actions are using a system that is harmful but they don't have control over. there is so much grey area it all can blend together.

@shauna@social.coop honestly i feel like seeing the way ai is getting used as a search replacement is a really clear example of this -- there is SO MUCH NOISE AND GARBAGE to dig through, with the worsening state of search engines, asking an unreliable robot to do that work seems like a better option than digging yourself.

@shauna@social.coop @b0rk@social.jvns.ca I do absolutely get it, even though I'm very opposed to LLMs (and the specific companies involved). But it's also very Nineteen Eighty Four. And I don't like that, not one bit.

@shauna@social.coop I'm willing to grant people a lot of grace. Times are HARD, I understand wanting something that will make it easy. I just can't help but think of AI as a sort of "convenience shackles" in a very similar way to a smartphone. It's designed to be cost marginal but is in practice highly extractive and also basically necessary to exist in society 😕

@shauna@social.coop this edges dangerously close to helplessness and to stripping people of their autonomy and ability to make ethical choices (or at least minimize harm to themselves and their surroundings). most of the time the stakes aren't high and the choice to engage with this tech is simply an indifferent one, trend-following hook and an addictive design snare. sure i can empathize with people doing objectively harmful things by recognizing it's shoved down their throats and straight up propagandized not just marketed, and none of us is immune to propaganda, but that empathy by no means should imply relieving them of the consequences of their choices, and it surely doesn't extend my attitude to the problem to enabling or even turning the blind eye. if anything it fills me with fury when people spin this tech in its current form as an acceptable solution/bandaid to anything or put it under any positive light. rather i hope under any discussions of the systemic deficiencies which *may* lead to its use, everyone is clear on that it's no good and should be resisted and struggled against in *all* cases.

@shauna@social.coop yeah, the problem is capital. Similarly, capital destroying communities is a big factor in drug addiction. Plenty of research shows that addiction is much easier to treat when people are part of a community where they can contribute.

@shauna@social.coop this is an entirely beautiful perspective. And one that I hadn’t considered on the use of AI. Cognitive pressures are no joke. We’re all susceptable. And the horrors of the world are in our scaffolding. It’s practically impossible to be pure of them while living in modern society.

  • @shauna@social.coop Technology like GPT just adds to the overwhelm. It makes up false information, it generates a lot of stuff that is difficult to sort through, and it's literally unavoidable. Not to mention how corporations are trying to force people to use it for work, without giving them a choice in the matter. It's literally making the problem worse. It's adding to the cognitive overload not reducing it

@shauna@social.coopy My daughter’s school uses pronote to communicate with parents. It’s terrible software, coded with the feet. The epitome of French Tech (pejorative.) It’s so bad that after a year of trying to gather the energy to write about all the problems with it, I had the school call me instead. This led to a 500-word minutes document, to which I added 850 words of clarification and additions. I concluded with “Please compare this to a printed sheet that I’d stick to the fridge.” @b0rk@social.jvns.ca

  • @ryanprior@mastodon.social I'm saying you're obviously missing the point and jumping from your shit metaphor to "you don't think they have any agency?" illustrates it. Everyone obviously has varying levels of agency, pressure, and obstacles they must surpass to fulfill our human needs. Trivializing it and blaming the people who have both the least cause and effect in the overall system leading to these shit outcomes for everyone just shows that you yourself are flailing around wastefully in your own response to the lack of control you have in this dire fucking situation.
