The minimum wage should be tied in percentage to the maximum rent allowed for a one-bedroom apartment. Someone working full-time should be able to cover all their minimal living expenses with their wage. It's a catastrophic society failure that this isn't the case anymore in many places around the world.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I managed to get social housing in Poland. I earn the minimum wage, and the rent is 20% of my salary.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange The old rule of thumb was rent equals 25% of wages. Now I read that people are paying over 50%.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange When I was young the minimum wage was a living wage. That's how it was implemented. On my meager wage of $1.25hr 40hrs got me an apartment, food, transpo (The basic living needs) and a beer after work. Even some medical cost. I also got much of my first 2 years of college at the same time. No debt. Jr college cost $5.00 for a student ID and books. Then we got Nixon and it all went away by the time we got Reagan, gone. Coincidence?

  • @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange "Minimum wage is not supposed to be a living wage" is literally their answer if you ask them about it, which is every interpretation of the word wrong, obviously.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange This is a bandaid solution, workers need to own whatever they produce. We do not need masters like Bezos and neither do we need negotiations in wage slavery, its will still be modern age slavery. The state and Epstein class will still have too much power and neither produce anything.

  • @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange 💯 I was just in Montana and people are working 3 jobs to pay rent...IN MONTANA! Imagine what it's like in the rest of the U.S.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I know both Paris and Tokyo both try to varying degrees to make this work. And while I am generally opposed to the argument that “regulations make housing prices go up,” they do sometimes. In a lot of cities, high density housing (including SRO) is essentially illegal in a lot of cities.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange In Germany the minimum wage is defined by an independent commission consisting of employers and employees. AFAIK its height depends on the cost of living, which includes the rent. Homepage

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I'd like to see it tied to some external benchmark. I rather like the MIT Living Wage Calculator. Where I live (MO, USA) for one person, no kids, it's running about $19/hr when our minimum wage is $15/hr. But I'm sure there would be a million arguments over which benchmark and how it's calculated.
