Tomorrow Vueling will once again resume its Barcelona-Madrid service after having stopped in early 2025. I was curious how many flights go between the two cities, which are roughly 485km apart. On a regular Monday, there are 18 flights going from Barcelona to Madrid, including the two new Vueling services. The capacity is 3158 per day in one direction. In contrast, there are 45 trains from Barcelona to Madrid, with a capacity of 19447 per day in one direction. The journey time by train is roughly three and a half hours, whereas the flights take an hour and 25 minutes. I created this visual to get a feel for how these numbers look over the course of 24 hours.
