@splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org I like when people guess(timate) answers to questions I post. Maybe I learn something new anyway, maybe I learn a neat new way to make educated guesses. Many questions I have don't have only one right answer, and getting more viewpoints and ideas is valuable. And yes, sometimes I learn whom to mute.

@drahflow@infosec.exchange @splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org I find that useful as well but there seems to be a broad consensus that most people don't. As evidence, the constant flow of posts like this. So as a member of society (we all are even if we don't mean to be) I think the original poster is suggesting to only do that if explicitly invited to. When we are the ones with the question, we can ask for partial answers and guesses if we want. It sounds to me like a fair request.

@drahflow@infosec.exchange @splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org There’s also a meaningful difference between • Unlabeled guesses/slop - Most people hate this • Labeled guesses/slop - Most people seem to dislike this, but at least it lets them know they can ignore unless they have nothing better • Reasoning through a situation you’ve never encountered based on your understanding of the parts involved - Most people seem to appreciate this, especially if you explain the thought process Somebody recently asked about an error I’ve never seen in a tool I’m familiar with. Several others posted troubleshooting steps in one direction (including some labeled slop), and I shared my suspicion in another. I was right in spite of “guessing”.
