Subject: Fediverse scheduled posting

krutonium said: I wish Mastodon base features included scheduled posting (unless i’ve missed it?) Sometimes you just want to schedule a post months into the future to when it’ll be relevant!
Newer releases of Mastodon 🦣𓃰 include a scheduled 📅 #posting feature. It’s limited in some respects, but it might work well enough for your purposes.
If your Fediverse instance [Mastodon or compatible] doesn’t support the feature, or if you need something more flexible, #FOSS can do that. Note: No “AI” is used. 🚫 This is old-school. 🏫
You’d need a #Linux 🐧 VPS or a Linux home laptop 💻 that you’re able to leave running. You can set up a scheduled posting feature on that box using a “bash” 🐚 Perl 🐫 or Python 🐍 script. The script can even post conditionally based on headlines that it sees on websites. 🎉
The core mechanism used is the Mastodon API. The script will post what you’d like to post, when you’d like the post to go out, based either on a schedule or on trigger events that show up on external websites.
There are existing third-party FOSS tools that might work for your purposes as well.
Ideally, one of these approaches will give you exactly what you need. 🎯
