I'm tired of the saying that people get more conservative as they get older. Reality check: people get more conservative as they get more wealthy. The people saying "people get more conservative as they get older" are white people living in a privileged bubble in which, in the generations since WW2, people like them typically amassed more wealth as they aged. #politics #economics #collapse #racism 1/2

But that's all over. The boomers have fucked up the U.S. economy and the world for everybody, and my kids will be the first generation of middle-class white people since WW2 to be worse off financially than their parents. If the fucking boomers think the kids entering the job market now are going to get "more conservative" as they age, they're deluding themselves. Politics are going to change for the better in the U.S. It's going to be painful to get there, but we're going to get there. 2/2

@jik@federate.social The phenomenon of (white) Boomers getting more conservative as they aged is exaggerated, too. They were always majority-conservative; it's just that when they were in their 20s they liked sex and drugs and didn't want to get drafted. The majority of them still voted for Nixon; it was just a slimmer majority than their elders. There's also significant correlation with race: younger generations are less conservative because they're less white.

@jik@federate.social You could say I've grown more conservative, but only for a very strict definition of the word. I'm now conservative enough to believe that anyone who puts families on the street, gobbles up wealth from every possible source, destroys everything that has taken centuries to create, I think those criminals ought to be punished. I feel very Pentateuch about it.

@jik@federate.social Would you be ever be so kind as to stop lumping everyone into the huge basket of "boomer". I'm considered a boomer and everyone of my friends are card carrying leftists. Might I suggest "Monied Boomers". Otherwise you're just being blindly classist. 1/2

@jik@federate.social Frankly, it's become a pejorative without a distinction and also a way to divide the left along ageist lines, and gin "up" a fake generational gap/divide, that politically does not exist. Because regardless of age we all truly suffer the same. It has and will always be us fighting the oligarchy not "boomers". Do as you may. This is a suggestion. 2/2

@jik@federate.social I’ve been the opposite. Gotten more liberal in my views as I’ve aged. Probably why I’ve lost lots of old friends.

@jik@federate.social Sadly, North Americans have been groomed to accept wealth hoarders, aka multi-millionaires and billionaires, as their leaders. AFAIK this started well before the "boomers" were born.

@jik@federate.social I have a different take: Some conservative older people have said that, implying it's just a generational cycle. However, I think that with the modern world changing so quickly and information getting spread instantly, there is actually a large-scale "before" and "after". The major shift in global awareness has been taking place since at least the 1960s. Obviously not everyone, but I think more and more people are in favor of compassionate, cooperative, and science-based policies, which translates into progressive politics. I'm guessing "conservative" parents are more likely to have children who are on the left, than lefty parents are to have conservative kids. (Edit: I'm not dismissing other factors listed in this thread, like the wealth bias, etc.)

@jik@federate.social I don’t know if I’m more or less conservative, but I’m less patient with politicians, promising any kind of slogan without a credible plan to deliver it. Perhaps it’s easier when you’re young to dream about possibilities as you get older you prefer competence of any political persuasion. I get tired of people talking about whether somebody is socialist or not as the primary attribute. I’m far more likely to ask are they actually going to be able to do what they are promising

  • @jik@federate.social My dad always hated that I was some clusterfuck of socialist and anarchist, and always said I'd grow up and become conservative. Except it turned out I was transgender, so that's right out the window. I'm not about to start voting my rights out the window.

@jik@federate.social We simply have pensions because we worked for union shops They were very strong after World War II until Reagan broke the air traffic controller union. If we truly, diligently worked on building more union shops we would have a middle class that mattered again.

@jik@federate.social In Australia that trend has already been reversed by millennials. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-26/millennials-rewriting-the-rules-of-australian-politics/106050836 I've also seen Boomers move left, aside from the Overton window shifting, there's a backlash against neo-liberal economics.

@jik@federate.social hah. You really touched some nerves with this one eh? The boomers bent the world around them, kindof like a gravity well in space. My boomer parents bought a house for $55k cdn in 1985 and sold it in 2012 for $500k cdn. They're both leftists but the policies their generation oversaw allowed housing to become a commodity, making homeownership now out of reach for most people not already in the market. I too blame the boomers collectively, not individually.
