@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org this change will actually allow for the standalone Desktop app. They have also been actively developing this capability. https://aboutsignal.com/news/signal-desktop-without-a-mobile-phone-standalone-version-in-development/ Google Play takes a significant cut of payments through their platform. If Signal was truly concerned about profit, they would have started by providing direct payments that bypass the Google Play Store (and Apple Store).

  • @seanm@infosec.exchange @ohir@social.vivaldi.net I didn't say anything about profit. I said forcing people to establish a payment method with Google to use this option given Google's behavior these days is stupid. And it is stupid.

@seanm@infosec.exchange > They have also been actively developing this capability. This capability is in the code since 10 years or so. Just not exposed to the non nerds, so while I have this setup with security professionals I talk, I couldn't manage to make it work for journalists and their sources to be non-techie source friendly. Fortunately my (and a few other people pointing) make them aware that the truth about desktop messages landing on the phone, and what it intails security-wise is out. When the general public ui for the standalone will land I'll take a look at it and post. @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org
