Do not connect ANY smart devices to your network. Ever. Just don't. https://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-smart-TVs-caught-logging-audio-with-screen-off-and-snooping-on-local-devices.1391214.0.html

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com The vast majority of my smart devices live on a very restricted VLAN, with access only to Home Assistant. This is the latest reminder in a long list of why it was a good idea to set that up.

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com Sigh… The TV, the speaker, all the light bulbs, the door bell, the security system, the automatic cat feeder, the smart relays, the robot vacuum… Time to create a special little SSID just for those guys. It’s either that or convert to amish at this point.

  • @jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com our trusted entertainment devices exposed as fascist tools? nobody saw this coming. muttering dark thoughts & throwing your tv the finger every time you walk past will probably move you up on the list of agitators. i'll let you know if it works for me.

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com I really appreciate the Gamers Nexus guys for framing the smart device horror in a way people that aren't paranoid security obsessed tech workers can understand. Ive been laughed out of the room for a decade when I try to stop friends and relatives from putting their smart toilets on their networks. Clearly im not good at communicating risk to non computer nerds.

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com Back in the 1970s, when I was a young videographer we saw the new portable 30 pound video cameras as a means to democratize the corporate oligarch controlled world of tv by empowering dispossessed communities to define themselves, not to be caricatured and defined by a handful of rich white men. Cable tv local stations, then the internet became that path. However, even then, 50 years ago, we warned that that was only half the equation and that other half held a totalitarian threat: any plugged in or connected device held the potential to spy on you. Back then, the option to disconnect on your terms was more obvious: manually disconnect any device from its power source or transmission point, so it can't use your power to spy on you. (Metaphorically and electronically) Since I also trained as a sound engineer and got to tour a professional post-production ADR studio and met an engineer who had worked for the US government on developing sound eavesdropping tech in the 70s, I had seen the sophistication of tech back then, it's more ubiquitous now. Does manually unplugging still work today? I don't know. Does turning off a cell disconnect me or do I pull the battery? I know I avoid adding smart appliances (no smart tv, or worn devices, or Alexa, etc) to reduce the number of things to disconnect, but I remain vulnerable with this tiny smart phone and wifi. Everything has a plus and a minus. Anything you embrace contains a threat. Critical thinking requires us to temper our hope and enthusiasm for the new with factual clear-eyed witness to the truths we may not wish to see. Social media, AI, data centers, starlink, driverless cars, etc are all meeting their tipping point. This is a good point in time, as much as it is the worst time. Be clear-eyed. #media #socialmedia #democracy

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com Well, I use mine as computer monitors. They're not connected to the internet. They can only store a limited amount of info in their buffer. Since I don't watch TV on them there's no opportunity to show me ads. So they don't "own my screen". I have a smart tv that is connected to an antenna that I use for watching TV. No streaming. So again, used like a dumb tv - no opportunity for them to show me ads. When I see people spending hundreds of dollars a month on tv packages because they "need" them, I just shame my head and think of the money I save.

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com Someone gave us an older LG "smart" TV when they "upgraded" to a bigger, "better" one. It begged us for the Wi-Fi password the first few times I turned it on but I threatened to throw it out and it shut up. (I also tweaked some settings that it said would disable its Wi-Fi begging but I don't trust it)

@jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com "This data collection pool is fed into into LG Ad Solutions (the company’s targeted advertising arm). LG claims they have roughly 216 million smart TV sales globally. On the other hand, the ad division says it has access to 363 million secondary addressable devices in the US alone by tracking other hardware on the same network. The sets also run Automated Content Recognition (ACR). It samples on-screen audio and video into digital fingerprints to log what users watch across inputs. "

@datenwolf@chaos.social @jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com If that becomes a reality it would be even worse than that. If rogue smart devices start auto connecting to ISP routers, they would connect to your neighbour’s network as easily as your own.

@datenwolf@chaos.social @jpoesen@social.jpoesen.com There's a (repetitive and annoying to watch) YouTube video from Gamers Nexus that implies these may be connecting to the ubiquitous "open" ISP WiFi networks from Comcast etc., so that you don't have to explicitly connect it to anything for it to surveil you. These use a portion of the Comcast-supplied modem/router's bandwidth to provide WiFi connectivity to Comcast customers, but you can be certain they have or will ink deals to grant access to surveillance TV's and appliances, in exchange for a piece of the action.
