Okie Fedi, I'm gonna be a bitch. My partner's neurodivergence makes it basically impossible for her to like, make alt text. She is also an artist and enjoys photography, but the Fedi's "no alt no like, no alt no boost" stuffs makes her feel excluded and less. And that's before the harassment and the smarmy reply guys "actually" her. Aside from the blatantly abelist stuffs, one super common response is that she should use Alt4Me to participate. Okie cool. A way to get help! But does it work? No. No it does not. I did a quick search of the Alt4Me hashtag. Of the 17 uses I saw in the last 5 days on mastodon.social: 11 posts got no help 3 posts got help 2 posts were telling ppl to use the hashtag 1 post was complaining abt ppl not using provided alts. Tbh? That is kind of fked. Fedi u aren't inclusive if u make systems to help ppl and u don't do the work to actually help. It makes it easier to say "lol we tried" IG, but it still leaves ppl without help... and IG gives preachy bullies another took to use to harass the ppl the tools are built for. "But we have a tag for that, use it!" They do. Do u? #Alt4Me #AltText #Fedi #NeuroDivergence #Ableism

@tiefling@bardicperspiration.club I have very little energy and often, I don't post images because making alt text feels too daunting for me. But I'm gonna follow this tag and try to help where I can, when I can. Thanks for bringing this up. Also, what's your partner profile? :neobun:

  • @tiefling@bardicperspiration.club I think a lot of people have unrealistically high expectations for alt text, and as a consequence they add a bunch of fluff, which makes writing alt-text feel daunting if that's the standard. Tell your gf she can alt text her images very minimally, and nobody will be mad.

  • OK, I'm curious: what do you think is the answer? I'm neuro-spicy, too, but because I want to NOT exclude people reliant on screen readers, the Android app I'm working on (and posting this from) which combines Mastodon and Bluesky in a single app, explicitly will not allow you to post any image without alt text.

@tiefling@bardicperspiration.club I don't have any (known) neurodivergent condition, but here's what I do. On my Android phone, I use the "circle to search" feature to highlight the image, and then prompt it with "alt text for this image". Then I paste the content back into the alt text box. Many people have legitimate objections to AI usage, particularly in creative fields. But this works very well.

@tiefling@bardicperspiration.club I don't think you're being a bitch here. My mate flat out refuses to post in the Fediverse because of what your partner is encountering. (Also has a similar critique over the way CWs are handled as well.) Both my partner and I have ADHD and it's daunting to do a full write-up when I'm low on spoons after a long day's work, yet want to share a quick photo I took. I do care about being more inclusive for disabled folks, but it also feels like writing alt text is a daunting and draining affair. For both alt text and CWs, I wish there was a more automated way to handle this. Like, having canned CW tags at the ready, or an image detection bot that actually works as intended for filling out alt text. (That's before getting into the weeds of "AI", which is contentious in itself.) I hope your partner finds a suitable way to handle this, because I'd sure love to know how, too.

@tiefling@bardicperspiration.club my partner has made similar complaints in the past. My suggestion to them was that they might be overthinking what’s required. ‘Anthro shark girl sits on a beach’ is fine, it doesn’t have to be some long sprawling description. It’s still a hurdle for them to use mastodon sadly. Alternatively - there is an account altbot@ fuzzies.wtf (I didnt want to directly tag it) that is run by somebody and it will analyse the image if an owner tags them on it and write alt text for it. Its opt in only, uses their local resources only, doesn’t read the post text, or save anything and they use a lower power algorithm as well. More details on the page.
