🔥Our history, going up in flames! What is happening in the UK? Fires are destroying so many of our historical Victoria mills. Dalton Mills in Keighley had yet another "mysterious" fire a few weeks ago. I explored this spot a few years ago, now all this history is lost. For future generations, I worry how much will be left of our British industrial heritage. #Victorian #Industrial #Heritage #England #Abandoned #Urbex #UrbanExploration

@ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social Alas, industrial heritage is often dismissed.

@ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social Here it's usually the simplest transition from the liability of caring about the heritage into the asset of having a free site in a good spot.

  • @ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social If it’s listed, then the existing fixtures etc are part of the listing. Conservation legislation doesn’t take into account that you might not want to buy a place like that just to spend a fortune turning it into a museum-piece. This is a pain for a private house (such as one with an old mill attached - guess how I know!), but for large places like that it’s a death sentence. No one with the money to do it up will take it on, so a lot of these places are either left to rot, or suffer fires - less original features left inside means more latitude for developers to remodel the interior. To be honest, the listing system needs an update, and developers, almost exclusively, need to be beaten like a rented mule, shoved off their private yachts into the North Sea in January, and all their assets sold to fund actual conservation of these buildings. Builders, great, all good. Developers, absolute spawn of satan, every last one.

@ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social A lot of our old mill buildings in New England have gone up in flames, too. I suspect arson in many cases.

@ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social When I used to work in Bradford it was common for listed wool mills to spontaneously combust before being replaced by flats 😞
