I just found out that @borgbackup@fosstodon.org #Borg #BorgBackup is vibe coded now. That's a tragedy. Really upsetting, to be honest. I've been safeguarding priceless data with Borg for years, but I obviously can't entrust something so important to code that wasn't written by skilled hands and reviewed by skilled minds. What full-system #backup software for #Linux do people recommend instead?

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org Wild to see in this thread that they not only play the slop machines but actively proselytize for them on social media 😅 Definitely not where I'm going to be storing my backups from now on

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org you can try Restic: https://restic.readthedocs.io/en/stable/

  • The Borg features I'm using are: * Stores on local (USB) or remote (ssh→USB) hard disk * Command-line interface with no daemon (which would be a problem with USB hot-plugged manually-mounted backup drives) * Encryption * Deduplication * Keeps historical backups with pruning (yearly, monthly, etc) * Preserves ACLs and extended attributes * Auto-excludes files with nodump flag * Auto-excludes folders with CACHEDIR.TAG * Can mount backup volumes (FUSE)

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org I've been using Restic for years. (I really hope this thread doesn't end up including "that's so too, now."!)

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org Thanks for the info, so I can delete this from my list. I'm restructuring my #backup strategies at the moment and I think I will use plain #rsync to copy my #QNAP #NAS to a hetzner storage box. @borgbackup@fosstodon.org

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org You may have a wrong impression of how borg development works. Just read what I wrote here about the topic in the past.

  • @argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @catsalad@infosec.exchange @borgbackup@fosstodon.org I’m using restic, but I assume it’s slopcoded now too. So many things are tainted.
