@guyjantic@infosec.exchange I know, it's not what you mean, but: its a solution nonetheless. We push climate change a bit more, and thus ourselves to the brink of extinction: problem solved...

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange 'ai' is being used to encapsulate both specialized and marketed as 'can do everything' llms. The conflation is the problem, and the marketers are milking it. A specialized llm that deals only with climate change might be helpful. I'd lay odds it could be. That sort of system does not require so many data centers. Unless the baby in the bathwater has no value.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange Driving many of our worst companies to over-extend themselves to collapse is not a solution I wanted, but... it's a solution I guess?

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange AI doesn't even generate knowledge, it just process the already established knowledge by humans. It's like putting a "wet floor" sign on a pool, that's how AI practically works.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange This is like the old Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy '42' question. What does 'solve' mean ? To some it means stopping climate breakdown without changing our economies and lifestyles - to others, our economies and lifestyles are precisely the problem that needs solving.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange Quite true.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange this whole “Sure, for now AI worsens [insert societal problem], but longterm, if we can just make a powerfull enough AI, it can actually solve it” is just the most basic form of scam: “if you give me 1000 quid today, I’ll give you the tenfold in a month. Pinkie promise”

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange Sorry, but AI does not create knowledge - it copies knowledge from many sources - and makes up “facts” if it can’t find the answer. I do agree we’ve known the solution to Climate Change for a very long time. Unfortunately money keeps getting in the way.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange “AI will solve climate change” = “We don't like the answer that nerds have been giving us. Whipping them to nerd harder hasn't worked.” | "We don't care.”

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange ai is just a programme based on language! Climate change requires us to stop pointless consuming that pollutes our world. You can worry, or you can act!

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange AI cannot generate new knowledge, because LLMs do not learn anything, only recycle what they have.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange Knowledge, in a strict sense, implies surviving contact with reality. And while we have long since foregone shielding reality from our AIs, we spend billions to shield our AIs from reality. Maybe in the future there will be a knowledge generating AI. Right now, we deliberately design them to fail at the task, requiring humans to carry them through the last, most arduous, mile.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange Great example of how the evolution of our brains actually has pushed us to avoid thinking in general, because naturally enforced calory restriction preferred lowest possible energy consumption except when in mortal danger! This instance showing preference for authoritarian submission among many, is IMHO explained by this neurophysiological basis: AI is just the latest king/god that humans make up to satisfy their evolutionary urge to push aside expensive thinking. 🤔

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange AI will probably solve climate change by removing the human race from the planet earth

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange In an alternate reality where governments exerted pressure to do things right, new data center projects would have to include their own energy generation from renewables in order to cool water that they would have to keep in a closed system. As opposed to tearing wind farms down while putting turbines to burn gas on top of people's houses. We're so deep into all kinds of wrong that AI can't hardly be blamed for how things turn out.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange I heard something similar before. Directly from a person who is in let's say... ...top 30 of the wealthiest people in the world. The conviction is: "let's make money now and we will solve global warming in the future when/if it will become a significant problem (as in: it starts to cut into the profits). The technological progress in the future will produce solutions (which currently do not exist) to the global warming problem." This is a "pie in the sky" magical thinking but it shows you the thought process (opposition) in relation to reducing carbon footprint, green energy, ecological policy focus, etc.
