@guyjantic@infosec.exchange 'ai' is being used to encapsulate both specialized and marketed as 'can do everything' llms. The conflation is the problem, and the marketers are milking it. A specialized llm that deals only with climate change might be helpful. I'd lay odds it could be. That sort of system does not require so many data centers. Unless the baby in the bathwater has no value.

@knowprose@mastodon.social @guyjantic@infosec.exchange Not sure an LLM would be worth much, but there are already specialized models for weather prediction that have proved extremely practical.

@knowprose@mastodon.social I've noticed, like you have, that "AI" is applied by the general public to a really wide range of computer thingies. Mostly people mean LLMs in the past year or two, but sometimes they are mentally including visual models as well, or the the connection/synthesis engines used by Palantir. This is a tangent from your comment but I've noticed that a lot of people talk about current AI (the stuff I mentioned above) as if it were disconnected from any of the gradual changes that led here. Palantir apparently started peddling their wares less than 5 years after 9/11. Google's chatbots have been making news for their tendencies toward fascism and not behaving in ways the engineers predicted. Machine learning models have been around for many years, and I think (?) current LLMs and visual models grew from them. I"m just noticing how we talk about the current genAI technologies. Disconnected, as if they sprouted from someone's brain all at once.
