If you've worked anywhere around me in the past 15 years, you've probably heard me say something like “this software is bad. all software is bad. even my own.” Today's (well, August’s… well, 2020 and beyond’s) PHP vulnerabilities don’t mean PHP is bad, but it does fit into my thesis that *all* software is bad. And the reason it is bad is that—in the names of progress and efficiency and profit—we have built software at 5% of what it ACTUALLY costs to build software, for the past 30 plus years.

@sean@scoat.es I'm trying my best to make software that doesn't suck. But capitalism is a reality and as someone developing a super niche retrocomputing project.. let's just say I'd like the payday if a company was paying my normal rate for this

  • @sean@scoat.es this is a great point, and it's also amazing in a way how we have managed to muddle along with only 5% of the investment. Yet, it seems all that other 95% just goes into duplicate work.

@sean@scoat.es And the budget to maintaining it over time? I'm being told that there's no budget for fairy tales 🫠
