🚨new publication alert🚨 Some types of El Niño lead to more melt over the Ross Ice Shelf in #Antarctica. In our paper led by PhD student Sanjiban Dutta, we look at the synoptic relationship where Eastern Pacific El Niños channel warm moist air over the Ross Ice Shelf. One to watch with the current #ElNino building.. #ClimateDiary https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2025JD045932

@Ruth_Mottram@fediscience.org Fascinating. Figure 7 is pure eye candy. It's the map / schematic Nino views on the Southern Hemisphere wind and pressure systems. Was hoping for a La Nina equivalent in the supplement but no such luck. Does La Nina only reverse the pressure systems or does it also reverse other elements depicted, do you recall? It'd be interesting in light of further weakening AMOC which causes a quasi-permanent La Nina according to team England in Australia http://theconversation.com/a-huge-atlantic-ocean-current-is-slowing-down-if-it-collapses-la-nina-could-become-the-norm-for-australia-184254 or paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01380-y The Conversation piece also has such a pretty eye candy schematic. The one by your student is clearer (although bad for the colour-blind).
