Finland has more than 700 libraries for a population of 5.6 million, offering everything from podcast studios and 3D printing to tennis rackets and swimming pool passes. According to Vänttinen, the most borrowed items after books in Helsinki libraries are spaces: rooms that can be pre-booked, free of charge, to meet, study, hold political discussions or make music. Among portable items, board games and console games top the list. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260618-the-weird-and-wonderful-libraries-of-finland

  • @FSonder@mastodon.ie Finland gets most things right! What don't they right! I must admit: I don't know!

@FSonder@mastodon.ie I bet their study rooms give you more than an hour as well.

  • @FSonder@mastodon.ie Anyone recall in the grimmest days of austerity when councils were forced to close libraries in the UK, the Tory communities secretary, Eric Pickles, said the only people who cared about libraries were ‘luvvies’. He was building on what culture secretary, Ed Vaizey had already said that was libraries were only used by the middle classes, therefore it didn’t matter if they were cut. Tories robbed the poorest of our state assets by making out these resources were irrelevant.

@FSonder@mastodon.ie Our local library, in NE Ohio, has a maker space w/ 3D printer, sewing machines, green screen, & more & sessions on learning to use such. With this & more, it's the heart of the community!

@FSonder@mastodon.ie Living in Paris, they are some in one library (not used though, so I don't know the conditions). But yeah, It's such a disaster to lack those pre-bookable rooms. It feels like privacy is a paid-option, and meeting, if free are either happening in business places or at organizer home...

@FSonder@mastodon.ie Yes, but people still go there for books too. :) I do like Oodi, the showcase central library in Helsinki, that has become a very social space, but Helsinki has a lot of smaller libraries too.
