This is Caerlaverock Castle, near Dumfries - notable for being the only triangular castle in the UK. The earliest parts of the building date to the C13th. In earlier times, the Cumbrian king Gwenddoleu ap Ceidio died at the Battle of Arthuret, in 573, in a fight over Caer-Laverock. This drove his bard, Myrddin Wyllt, insane and he run off into the woods, an act that possibly inspired the character of Merlin in Arthurian legend. #Photography #History #Myth #Scotland #Architecture

  • @RickGaehl@mstdn.social There is the Triangular Lodge in #Northamptonshire, which symbolises the #HolyTrinity, & was designed & built by one of the Gunpowder Plotters, Sir Thomas Tresham, see: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/rushton-triangular-lodge/; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Tresham_(died_1605)).

@RickGaehl@mstdn.social The Haldon and Powderham Belvederes are follies, and I'm not sure what Alfred's Tower at Stourhead is. Not military strong points though. Post-attillery, #Vauban, forts have quite a lot more points, for mutual enfilading fire support, I don't know what the smallest number is.
