Was delighted to guest on the Fulcrum Film Club podcast to talk about "Sink the Bismarck!" Bismarck isn't just a war film that has stood up well, it represents a turning point in how war films were shot and scripted. Because it accidentally became a big hit in the US. Punchline: "To start with, our everyday language is full of words like unlikely, possible, likely, rare and so on, but these vague terms are easily misunderstood, and we shall see they may have even increased the risk of nuclear war." Spiegelhalter, 2024, p. 7

I am unbelievably excited by the diversity and talent in the group of potential Green candidates for the next Edinburgh City Council elections. I care deeply about representation in politics, and local government is poor across the board in terms of gender, racial and other forms of diversity. We have a chance to make a difference in this as Greens, by selecting our own candidates carefully (particularly as we might end up the biggest party after the next elections!) and with diversity in mind.

The Scottish Government are right to have apologised for so-called 'Tinker Experiments', which caused significant and lasting trauma to Scottish Gypsy/Traveller families. But that is only a first step in righting the wrongs done by Scottish institutions, and they must do more.

In Edinburgh, the provision of temporary accommodation is still falling far short of what is needed. I asked the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice and Housing what progress has been made on replenishing temporary accommodation which has been flipped to permanent accommodation following updates to the government's Housing Emergency Action Plan.

Times are pretty tough right now as we face major pushbacks on all our rights and freedoms, but it was good to be in a room of incredible people at the Scottish LGBTQIA+ Sector's Parliamentarians Reception, standing together and championing LGBTQIA+ rights. As the Scottish Greens spokesperson on Equalities and International Development, I am keen to do all I can to best support my LGBTQIA+ constituents and be an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community across Scotland and beyond 🌈

RE: https://mastodon.scot/@katenevens/117429099830147236 If you're a member of the Edinburgh Greens - voting is now open to select our candidates for the local elections in May 💚

I'm really pleased that we the @ScottishGreens have decided to leave Twitter/X, and the SNP and Scottish Government are now following suit. Well done to our Women's Network for advocating so strongly that this should happen ✊ https://www.thenational.scot/news/26640058.scottish-greens-quit-x-misinformation-hate/

Really good to see SNP members passing a motion at their conference calling for a comprehensive ban on conversion practices in Scotland - I hope the Government takes heed, and I am ready to work with everyone to help make this happen https://greens.scot/news/no-place-for-conversion-practices-in-modern-scotland

I really enjoyed taking part in Clare Haughey MSP's member's debate on Malawi, and learning more about the country and Scotland's partnership with them. Prior to being elected as an MSP, I spent much of my career working in international development, and I am a strong believer in taking feminist, anti-racist and decolonial approaches to both Scotland's domestic and international affairs.

RE: https://mastodon.scot/@ScottishGreens/117477467943945977 Awful news to wake up to today. New oil and gas fields won't bring down our bills and won't create secure jobs, and will only cause untold damage to our climate. We need a Just Transition now, and governments brave enough to end our reliance on fossil fuels

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m really proud to support Breast Cancer Now for #WearItPink. It was great to meet with the team alongside a number of women living with metastatic breast cancer at the Scottish Parliament to hear more about what MSPs can do to make a meaningful difference to their lives.
