"After multiple delays, the European Commission on Wednesday unveiled what it calls its first comprehensive strategy to curb Europe’s reliance on foreign cloud services, semiconductors and software — a sweeping package spanning the full technology stack from chips to cloud to AI." #RamshaJahangir, 2026 https://www.techpolicy.press/eu-unveils-sweeping-tech-sovereignty-push-balancing-autonomy-with-openness/ This is the way. The EU, like China, has the advantage that it's large enough to run an effective industrial strategy in a globalized economy. (1/2)

This is bit worrying though; "The Cloud and AI Development Act sets out a series of 'Cloud and AI Leadership Initiatives" aimed at scaling European capabilities, from research funding to large-scale industrial deployment. It proposes fast-track 'data center acceleration zones', where permits would be granted within 12 months, and introduces procurement criteria designed to give preference to providers that demonstrate added value within the EU." #RamshaJahangir, 2026

"But I think there are two questions here. One is obviously to build scale in compute because Europe is behind. And then the other question is who controls the infrastructure and the distribution and the ecosystem?" #RamshaJahangir, 2026 https://www.techpolicy.press/is-europe-getting-ai-wrong/ The second one is an important question. The other one totally ignores the point Kaltheuner just made (see previous post), and makes some highly questionable assumptions. Does the EU actually *need* more hyperscale "compute"? (1/?)
