Il suo canto accompagna le giornate più calde dell’estate, ma la cicala è anche protagonista di una delle leggende più curiose del mondo animale: secondo una credenza molto diffusa, dopo aver cantato per tutta la stagione, alla fine del suo ciclo vitale sarebbe destinata addirittura a esplodere. La realtà, però, è molto diversa. E, soprattutto, la vita della cicala non si esaurisce affatto nelle poche settimane in cui la vediamo sugli alberi.
La maggior parte dell’esistenza di questi insetti si svolge infatti lontano dagli occhi. Dopo la riproduzione, la femmina depone le uova sui rami o nelle fessure della vegetazione. Quando le larve nascono, scendono nel terreno e vi trascorrono gran parte della loro vita, nutrendosi della linfa delle radici attraverso un apparato boccale specializzato.
La durata di questa fase dipende dalla specie. In molte cicale europee il periodo trascorso sottoterra può durare diversi anni, mentre alcune specie hanno cicli molto più lunghi. Le celebri cicale periodiche del Nord America, per esempio, rimangono sotto terra per 13 o 17 anni prima di emergere tutte insieme.

However, the reality is very different. And, above all, the life of the cicada does not exhaust itself at all in the few weeks that we see them on trees.
Most of these insects’ existence takes place away from our eyes. After reproduction, the female lays eggs on branches or in crevices in vegetation. When the larvae are born, they descend into the ground and spend most of their lives there, feeding on root sap through a specialized mouthpart.
The duration of this phase depends on the species. In many European cicadas, the period spent underground can last several years, while some species have much longer cycles. The famous periodical cicadas of North America, for example, remain underground for 13 or 17 years before emerging all together.
