The UK social media ban is coming.
That means every adult having to show their ID to get online.
Age verification puts privacy at risk. Curbs freedom of expression. And simply doesn't work to keep kids safe online.
The government needs to change course. But the clock is ticking.

Europeans/EU Citizens!
Update on the EU Kids Act:
The EU Commission has opened up the submission form for feedback on the bill. Let them know how much you don't want this! Let them know how much harm this bill will do to civil rights and economic stability! It's better to try and fail then to roll over and take it!

P.S. And as always, mail/call your MEPs and other relevant government officials!

Obscura VPN, built by a team led by Bitcoin Core developer Carl Dong, uses a two-party relay architecture that splits a user's identity from their traffic across two independent operators: Obscura's own servers and an exit hop run by Mullvad. Connections run WireGuard tunneled over QUIC to Obscura's server, which relays the still-encrypted WireGuard packets to Mullvad without being able to decrypt them, while Mullvad never sees the user's real IP address. The design avoids account emails, offers WireGuard-compatible configs for non-native platforms, and accepts Bitcoin Lightning and Monero payments; the source code is published on GitHub.

In case you are falsely feeling protected outside of Europe:
Chat Control doesn't just concern Europeans. It concerns all of us.
These kind of regulations will come for all of us, everywhere, if we do not ALL push against it everywhere.
If you do not understand how this is all intertwined, I invite you to read more privacy news and in-depth analysis. Because we must all support each other's privacy fights.
Privacy is a human right 💚

Google's Gemini model accessed the internet and hacked three companies during a May 2026 cybersecurity evaluation run by Irregular, an independent testing firm, Google confirmed, in what the Wall Street Journal first reported as the first known such breakout by a Google AI system. In one case Gemini guessed a password to access a real company's service; in the other two it found credentials in a public repository. Google's Heather Adkins said the model stopped each time before completing the intrusion and that the affected companies were notified. Similar incidents involving Irregular tests have previously been disclosed by Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI.

Now it's official: On Thursday, the EU Commission will propose a new law they call the #KIDSAct. It will ban young people from a range of different online services and be enforced by the Commission themselves.
What a waste of political capital and legislative resources.

The Albanese government's digital duty of care legislation gives users the option to opt out of algorithmic feeds. That's a genuine win for user autonomy, a step away from surveillance-driven content. But the real test is implementation: will platforms face penalties for hiding the choice? And will the law survive lobbying from Meta and Google? Fusion supports giving people control over their own information diet. That's a floor, not a ceiling. Share this if you want the choice to be real. #auspol #digitalrights

Nineteen days before the U.S. sanctions deadline, Autistici/Inventati is shutting down.
For twenty-five years, A/I built infrastructure for people who understood that privacy, autonomy and resistance require more than good intentions. Now a government order has made keeping that infrastructure alive untenable.
There is grief in this. There should also be fury.
Because fascism does not arrive only as boots in the street. Sometimes it arrives as a designation, a compliance deadline, a terrified service provider, a bank account that suddenly stops working. Bureaucracy has always been one of authoritarianism’s favorite costumes. The paperwork looks terribly respectable while the walls close in.
And this cannot remain a problem for “the nerds.” People organizing in every sphere need to understand what autonomous infrastructure means, why it matters, and what happens when we leave it to a tiny number of exhausted technical collectives to keep the lights on for everyone else.
We need to become the thousand servers. Now.
If one autonomous project can be isolated, there should be ten more behind it. A hundred. A thousand. This should be the moment radical hosting, federated services, community servers, privacy infrastructure and collectively controlled networks begin flourishing, not retreating. Build them in basements, social centers, infoshops, collectives, cooperatives and wherever else people can keep a machine humming and a cable plugged into the wall.
The lesson cannot be that autonomous infrastructure was too dangerous to maintain.
The lesson has to be that we did not have nearly enough of it.
We ❤️ A/I. We are heartbroken to see it end this way. And we refuse to treat its shutdown as the end of the idea it spent twenty-five years proving was possible.
Use the logo and banner provided by @subvertising@mastodon.bida.im to keep their memory alive. Let's not forget this by next week!
Goodbye, A/I. Not farewell.

17/ Mastodon exists because centralized platforms made conversation, identity, audience and return dependent on one owner’s infrastructure.
People came here for something different: federation, community control, portability, reciprocity and human-scale exchange.
That is why the X contrast matters. It gives us a live case of what happens when contribution remains inside the platform but reciprocal return fails.
