Marco Bonini presents the new film with Edoardo Leo: “He didn’t want to do it, but he could have…”
AGI - "It’s not a moral blackmail through illness, but a birth.” Presented at Casa Alice as part of the Rome Film Festival, “If You Love Someone Tell Him” is the cinematic adaptation of the novel by Marco Bonini with the same name.
In an exclusive interview with AGI, the director recounts the profound meaning of the film and the choice of a star-studded cast led by Edoardo Leo, Claudia Gerini, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, and Biagio Venditti.
A health film: if men don’t change, they die
The heart of the work addresses the emotional transformation of men and the weight of cultural conditioning, as explains the director: “This is not an ideological film, it's a health film. It tells us that if men don’t make a change, they risk dying physically. The story is about a birth through illness.”
The loss of memory to restart the heart
The paradox at the center of the narrative revolves around the change of the protagonist Sergio (Edoardo Leo) and his renewed connection with his family: “A culture that had blocked the character’s heart is forgotten – explains the director – the muscle starts beating thanks to the loss of memory. They, the relatives, don't stay because he's sick, but because he has changed.”
The role of Edoardo Leo
Regarding the choice of the protagonist in the role of the father, Bonini reveals the initial doubts of the actor and the reason why he was the only one capable of interpreting him: “We tried not to make Edoardo play the part of my father. He didn’t want to do it, but I knew that only he could do it. This is a character who frequents the ridiculous without ever surpassing it: only those who had seen it happen could know how to bring it to life.”
