/bin /usr/bin question
While i think the /usr/bin merge is a neccssary adaption to modern usage, and while i see the uaecase of /usr/bin over /bin in immutable distros, i’d rather go closer to hardware personally and rather have /bin as real directory and /usr/bin the symlink.
So i copied /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin (which is also in $PATH) in preparation, because used tooling like rm, ln, cp, is also in /usr/bin. Turns out, in my PATH the later comes before the former path, having preference. Which lead to su complaining about not having access to a authorization server.
Which leads me to my question: is security and boot/bootstrap tooling ok with symlinks or being on a different path, or is that a compile time option of the distro (Artix)?

Haiku 4.5 “reasoning” of duck.ai just straight up answers this question, with multiple options.

That’s the whole point of VPN providers. They’re not in your jurisdiction.
The ISP and DNS, that’s old old news.

Isn’t this a case where regex may be a bad choice?

Shouldn’t you replace “x11-user” with your username?
If you still can’t get it to work, take a look here and try the startx comand on a tty first (a display-mamager is yet another layer of complexity and potential blockers). If you get permission errors, try adding your user to the video group.
If you want to do it manually (without some limitations of startx), take a look at sx.

Because it’s clearly not 1926 and it likely will not be around in 2126.

It could be useful for 3-way split, i guess.

Any scripts/toolbox around crun/runc for containers?
cross-posted from: lemmy.zip/post/71965490
Once you know how it works, managing containers manually with crun is pretty easy. But if you don’t want to do everything manually, the next best thing is podman.
But podman pulls already around 500 MB in dependencies on Alpine, while half of it’s features don’t work without Systemd and the other half duplicates system-interfaces on a local website.
Which is why, before i create my own scripts, anything that let’s you with a single command
create container from template
add sub-uid:gid
add respective default nftable rule
same for deleting container
list contianers by status
Things like that?

Well, i guess there’s a misinderstandong about what a wm is (a stacking one, like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, is also one just like a tiling one like i3) so i was not sure if you’re a bot. No offense intended.

dd is neither the best nor a suitable method (dd is a scalpel not a shovel, use cp or cat). But optical media are tricky either way. redumper was made for a disc preservation initiative.

Arch is as lightweight or heavy as you want it to be. Except the Systemd stack, that locks you a bit in. That’s where Artix comes into play.

I don’t think that works. Apple cider, yes. But peach, plum, stuff like that, is good for liquoir. Even pear is only good as a ingredient after the cider is done.

I really hate this shit
If you have Play Services running, Google owns your phone (and also tracks you, and sucks 50% of the juice for it). Just rip 'em out.

The OOM killer has a much smarter heuristic to deprioritise processes which are being actively used.
Whivh is ehy yoi’re stuck for 2 minutes until it’s done in low-memory. And why i use earlyoom.
(and why yet another systemd-somethingd? Free the service!)

Creating a (usable) backup of a soon failing data carrier should be legal either way. Yeah, a lot of countries have stupid laws there, but as long as you don’t share the data on the internet, you should be fine.

They do: sort -t ‘,’ -k 2,3 list.csv |less. This example treats columns 2 + 3 as one single column, which few of the GUI viewers can, if any.
The problem with speed in GUI with large files is, that the frameworks often do have a widget for the task, but it’s a generalized one with all kinds of features, not optimized for speed. The fast editors/viewers usually create their own widget for the task.

I tend to do config loaders around commands like ffmpeg, magick, tidy. Just too much to research the switches each time you need them.

LibreOffice replacing the commercial office suite.
how to open and save documents in LibreOffice, how to access files on Nextcloud,
Also recommend them to save follow the office suites nagging and save future documents in Open Document Format. Because OOXML (.docx & co.) is the villain here in compatibility and formatting issues.
