@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social you do realize he was the architect of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, had most of his associates guillotined, ordered what has been called a genocide in Vendée, and was eventually guillotined himself. The prototype of how noble intentions turn into murderous atrocities.

@fazalmajid@social.vivaldi.net He was intransigent and a very controversial figure but did a ton of great things (as well as not so great ones) such as abolishing the death penalty, working for the voting rights of then 'minorities', and as Terror took place he tried to limit its excesses. He was also one of the first involved in the abolition of slavery.🤷♀️
