"Nerds would rather be slavers than admit that their stochastic token predictor is not intelligent" reveals way more about nerds and their views on other human beings than it says about Chatbots.

Seeing the damage that "AI" is doing to the Kernel (not just in Slop code being integrated that will bite us later but in making becoming a new kernel developer even harder than it is at a time where we should really be thinking about how to fill that pipeline) is super painful. I think that - like Wikipedia - Linux as an alternative platform for computing was one of the new wonders of the world, something that showed that a better world is possible. And we're just pissing it awa...

"I suggest the social action: shame. Shame these people. Their actions are shameful. AI bros hate being shamed and they try to make rules against shaming — because shame works. None of these people doing shameful things deserve a place in polite company. They should be shamed for their shameful choices. The AI industry is also running a PR push to redefine common word usage. The word “slop” is also super effective — so the bros really hate “slop” and try to define it to mean slop they don...

There's a form of grief about the state of the climate, the species we killed with out actions, the damage we've done to the ecosystem. Grief about not what we "lost" but what we destroyed (often through negligence). I do feel a very similar kind of grief when I think about "AI" and what its usage does to our cultural expression and our collaborative infrasturctures.

If "AI" were a mere tool and not a political narrative you wouldn't need to headline "X used AI to do Y" all the time. Anything anyone does while "AI" is involved must reify "AI"'s power and relevance. Because it's not "just a tool", it's a bigger project of disenfranchisement some willingly embrace.

"I find it both astounding yet also entirely expected that we are now years into the AI bubble and everything coming out of it still looks like complete shit. And will continue to do so: these companies can iterate and tweak all they want, tell us this is the future for as long as they want and and they'll never learn, because the things they're making are without any kind of soul or spark, and so will always look like shit." (Article title: Unity's New AI Thing Is A Soull...

There was this consensus of not going to X after Elon Musk turned it into a right-wing hellhole but I see more and more especially journalists going back "because the AI people are there". Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.

Researchers analyzed the epistemic diversity of LLMs (meaning: how many different positions/kinds of information do they produce for a given input). Result: "every system is less diverse than a search baseline. This gap is not uniform: RAG can improve diversity, while large models are counterintuitively less diverse than smaller ones. Moreover, LLM parametric knowledge systematically reflects English over local-language knowledge for country specific topics." https://arxiv.org/abs/25...

The only threat to humanity that "AI" represents is as the producer of increasing amounts of CO2, e-waste. As a massive polluter and destroyer of our ecosystem. Everything else is just bullshit.

If you want to hurt people, lack of knowledge is not your problem. And nobody needs to develop a new chemical to do terrorism. All you need is readily available. This is just "AI" labs creating imaginary issues to distract us from the real harm they cause.

"So what’s the AI artist paradox? It’s that by either having or lacking intelligence, AI-based art generators preclude the existence of so-called “AI artists”. By manifesting either an artwork or an artist, the AI monopolizes artistic contribution." (Article title: The AI Artist Paradox) https://heydonworks.com/article/the-ai-art-paradox/

The EU AI Act forces you to label a lot of AI generated content like images or video or text - mostly as a way to fight mis/disinformation. For images for example you do not have to do that if they are just illustrative illustrations but you have to do it if anyone could mistake it for something real (like a generated picture of a person). I kinda wonder how that applies to code (software). The code is not illustrative but functional and "a person did it" carries a lot of weight in...
