@drhistorybrad the people I know who are really into that kind of thing, know languages can usually also be super absurd (like the "Buffalo buffalo..." sentence), so don't harp on the correct ways to do things. It's also always evolving so the main thing is whether you get your point across.

@kevinrothrock my theory is it relates to the randomness of sports and that I'm more likely to try to watch if a team has been doing well and more likely to not watch if they've been doing poorly and in both cases they're likely to revert to the mean.

@simon that's pretty cool but I do hope people spend a lot of time figuring out how to make any resulting work not horribly racist and sexist, given that I imagine societal norms have changed a ton since the vast majority of works in the public domain were created.

@jalcine@todon.eu IMO 2024 is a choice of harm reduction because one of the sides is more plausibly swayed (if not completely then at least partially) by large scale left demonstrations, and one will be way more trigger happy on sending the national guard into universities/etc and making it legal to drive cars through protests at a national level.

@jalcine@todon.eu I'm definitely not disagreeing that those folks in the current admin have done bad things, and that there are large populations that are still being harmed by decisions they've made and even positions they still hold, but again, I believe that there is a much greater chance they will be convinced to change their minds (or at least soften their stances) where the other side will 100% never change. The pragmatist always votes for the person they have a chance to c...

@Shebeencounter@mastodon.world @jalcine@todon.eu to my point on Biden being willing to change his mind on things like this: https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/521326-biden-says-1994-crime-bill-was-a-mistake-during-abc-town-hall/ things have changed a lot since then, Biden at least acknowledges that a little bit. Trump would probably like to still execute the exonerated Central Park 5... He's still never apologized for the ad he made in 1989. Again, it's not that Biden hasn&...

@pamelafox maybe everyone just already has too much junk already? Gifts are probably mostly duplicative/unnecessary at least in middle income and above, which means you have to deal with what to do with unwanted stuff.

@simon @jacob I think autonomous cars have a lot of similar problems though, for example maybe bias against cyclists and cutting things close with them, or sensor limitations/bad training data not being as likely to identify black people. I guess one difference is maybe/hopefully there is stronger incentive to solve those issues when the consequences are a lot more immediate and clear.

@simon I'm guessing they count at least 5 days a week but in order to publish reports they probably need to go though some procedure that isn't negligible, so they only report every other day to have more time for counting.
