#1001Albums Aladdin Sane by David Bowie https://album.link/i/1039655668 Ask anyone to draw a sketch of David Bowie and it’s a fair bet that they will include the instantly recognisable lightning bolt image from this album cover - even the default apple emoji for a rock star is based on this. However, it is less well known that this image refers to Bowie’s view of his character as a split personality as well as the schizophrenia that his half brother Terry lived with.

#1001Albums Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu https://album.link/i/1442453257 This album was an unexpected joy, with lots of nice touches in the music and lyrics. Erykah Badu has an expressive voice, reminding me of Lauren Hill, which brings this selection of honest and confessional songs to life. I particularly enjoyed “Cleva” which is about valuing intelligence over physical attractiveness and features the great Roy Ayers on vibraphone giving a jazzy feel.

#1001Albums Koweit, rive gauche by Koffi Olomidé https://album.link/i/1070541934 I was sort of enjoying this mix of slightly cheesy ballads and danceable African beats by this Congolese singer, and then I started reading his wikipedia page.

#1001Albums Rid of Me by PJ Harvey https://album.link/i/1440923277 I’ve been looking forward to this one coming up. I really enjoyed PJ Harvey’s debut album (first heard through this list) and this one is even better, thanks in part to superb production by the great Steve Albini that is both unvarnished and dramatic.

#1001Albums Rhythm Nation 1814 by Janet Jackson https://album.link/i/1440838561 Janet was the youngest Jackson sibling, and the one who managed to escape the overbearing control of their abusive father. This album promised social commentary and there are little interstitial stings to introduce the tracks, but they don’t really go much further than saying that racial strife and poverty are bad, and maybe education is a good thing, m-kay?

#1001Albums I Against I by Bad Brains https://album.link/i/115821017 Mixing hardcore punk with reggae vocals is certainly an unlikely combination, but Bad Brains just about pull it off. One track was even recorded via phone from prison whilst the singer was doing time for dealing ganja, which is certainly committing to the bit. This is a short album - 10 tracks in 30 minutes - but it never feels rushed or as if you are being short changed.

#1001Albums Planet Rock: The Album by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force https://album.link/i/1288203472 Let’s start with the good stuff. This is a genre defining album that takes the icy electronic music of Kraftwerk (reproduced in the studio rather than sampled) and melds it with a danceable beat to create something genuinely new and fresh. It’s good to see that the members of Kraftwerk get individual writing credits on this, which earns this album a star.

#1001Albums Like a Prayer by Madonna https://album.link/i/83448003 Madonna may have started the 80s as a carefree material girl but as the decade closed, she was thinking about faith and family. The title track, and the accompanying video in particular, caused a huge fuss at the time, but looking back on this now shows that this is actually from the (small c) conservative viewpoint of someone raised in the catholic faith with all of the associated iconography.

#1001Albums Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized https://album.link/i/1502476612 I’d been looking forward to this one since hearing Spacemen 3 on this list recently. This was effectively Jason Pierce’s solo project after his previous band broke up, featuring various musicians as the band evolved. His girlfriend at the time was keyboard player Kate Radley and they were in the middle of a relationship breakdown during the recording, which is reflected in several of the s...

#1001Albums Live in Japan by Deep Purple https://album.link/i/65041635 As much as I like Deep Purple, I’m not really sure why this album is on the list. It’s notable for being a raw, live recording, straight from the mixing desk to a basic eight track recorder with no overdubs or post production polishing, so it should be as close to what the crowd of fans in Tokyo and Osaka heard on the night as it’s possible to get.

#1001Albums Can't Buy a Thrill by Steely Dan https://album.link/i/1440496279 If you want an example of why this list of 1001 albums is biased toward white, male rock stars you just have to see that there are four Steely Dan albums on here (and a crappy Donald Fagan solo effort) and only two from Dolly Parton. How many middle of the road yacht rock albums by bands named after steam powered dildoes do you need in your life? Sod this, I'm listening to The Grass is Blue instead.

#1001Albums Heroes by David Bowie https://album.link/gb/i/1347894082 Picking a favourite Bowie album is a little bit like being asked to name your most loved child. For me, the Berlin trilogy is like a set of triplets - they all have their quirks and individual personalities but they also have a unique bond between them. If Lodger is the cheeky outsider and Low the introspective, arty one, then Heroes is the confident middle child that gets the balance right.
