Lots of requests to non-existent PHP login pages in the logs again today. Almost tempted to get up to some mischief with this.

Had a dream last night where I had shirts printed that just said "/opt". Kinda tempted to do this.

Plumbers have been through. We have new bathroom taps! They're smooth like butter (like a criminal undercover ♫). I've never bought taps before. Being a renter until two years ago, the opportunity and/or requirement never arose.

Should I get into domestic LTO tape for airgapped backups when all else fails? Probably not. But one can ponitificate. https://www.rubenerd.au/is-it-time-to-get-into-domestic-lto/

I know I’ve said this before, but we’re so lucky we live walking distance from a Tong Li, a lovely green grocer, and an Aldi. I had to go to Colesworth last night, and the prices made me laugh out loud. Well and truly taking Australians for a ride. (And it’s not even “good”. I remember having a convo in Singapore with someone saying Jason’s was too expensive compared to NTUC Fairprice, but they stock very different stuff).

Got my new data centre pass, and they printed my photo on it sideways. The aspect ratio is still for a portrait photo, but it’s rotated 90 degrees and stretched. 10/10, no notes!

My wife (still not used to saying that!) has launched her art goods store, and I couldn't be more proud. ♡ https://kirisvielart.acggoods.com/ All hand drawn and small-batch printed. If you've ever wanted my blog mascot as a good quality vinyl sticker, now you can.

Used my fingernails as tools again, which is *always* a bad idea. Anyone... have tips for dealing with a fingernail that split below the white bit? I have it in a plaster right now.

I'm so glad I got back on the OmniFocus train. Only task management tool I've ever used that works the way my brain does. I don't have to fight it. It's not ideal, but then, neither is my brain.

Just got another email clearly written by AI. Tempted to reply asking them to tell me in their words what they need, because I don't have time for slop. (And no, AI "summary" tools aren't the answer either).

(On social media break while travelling, but this is my ongoing Vietnam 2026 blog post series if anyone is interested. Trying to chill but also so much to see/do hah). https://www.rubenerd.au/tag/vietnam2026/

"This Agentic AI tool has made coding cheap!" Cheap... for whom exactly? Though I guess "cheap" is also a judgement about quality as well, so touché.

Pardon the French, but fuck I love #NetBSD. Had a long train ride home, so SSH’d into my Shonen Jump box at home, then into my old Solaris box, then my Pentium 1. It all still works, and it’s wonderful. Wanted to try something, built a little chroot, done. It’s all so predictable and consistent and wonderful. And… increasingly rare.

The SilverStone FLP02 retro beige case has 3 positions for its upper drive sleds, but only ships with 2. On a whim I emailed and asked if I could buy another one. Within 24 hours they arranged shipment for one, for USD 6. SilverStone are awesome!

Morning waves to Monday people in this and similar timezones 👋 . What an awkward sentence. I'm on my first double espresso of the day. Feels like I'll need it, based on The Calendar. Update: This espresso is delicious! Wow! What a difference starting the day right makes. #tzag

A non-essential tool I use has changed their login process to be far more complicated. I've mitigated this by making my account login much less secure. Bravo, claps all around!

Generative "AI" is like plutonium and PII. There are *extremely* limited cases where its use is appropriate, and misuse carries severe issues. We're far enough along in this bubble where pleading ignorance also doesn't fly. The way in which people are speed-running Fuck Around and Find Out when it comes to this stuff shouldn't keep surprising me, yet here we are! -- PII: Personally identifiable information. You can't have a data leak with data...

The new Commodore announced the 64C Ultimate, and I'm happy for a whole multitude of reasons, some of which I awkwardly wrote about here. tl;dr: The 64C was my favourite 64, and something something optimism. https://www.rubenerd.au/commodore-releases-the-64c-ultimate/

Equinix will now only deal with you directly if you have $50K (IIRC) in additional spend, otherwise they're palming you off to a distibutor. And the one they've chosen in Australia is... not ideal.

Only times I’ve “experienced” racism is second hand, via people I’ve walked with. Today, an older white woman had a rant as she walked past Clara, saying she was “Chinese” as though it were a pejorative. I stopped and called her out for it, and she mumbled and slunk away, because of course she was too cowardly to face someone about it.

Two rude emails last night, but got a comment from a gentleman saying he'd retired many years ago, and that he drinks his tea while reading my blog every morning. This image of a father figure in a dressing gown on his porch in the rural US reading my silly words on his iPad just... fills me with more joy than I care to admit. (Also, hey look, imposter syndrome! I must have tricked him somehow into reading my stuff).

Seeing more European governments announcing plans to switch to Linux over sovereignty concerns. Curious what distros they'll end up choosing. The news articles and government press releases don't usually say.
