(he/man) I am 72-year-old paperhanger writing often about wallpaper history. My "likes" are: neoplatonism, democracy, and learning to be a better human. I live in Berkshire County, MA. I have a lovely wife and we do the Jumble every night in bed. My (So. Korean) adopted daughter is married and lives in Portsmouth, ME. That's me in a nutshell!

@RickiTarr True. I think the French government has the right idea about this. It's ok to be atheist; it's not ok to be anti-theist.

@carnage4life Of course. Because as we all know, quantity equals quality.

@DrYohanJohn All true. However, do we really need "the significance of a complex process of mediation" for most, if not all, of the everyday things we need to grasp and make sense of? Is not this "immediate knowledge" enough, for most purposes?

@DrYohanJohn Here he seems to be following Kant in a distrust that we can really know "the thing in itself" as we should. Or, enough; or maybe even at all, as you say. But when it comes to me accepting that you see a certain tree, for example, pretty much in the same way, and with the same results, that I see that same tree, and so we can therefore talk about it and compare notes, I'm a bit lost as to why this exchange cannot be at least a small step on building a knowl...

@Wolven Sounds like it is closely related to the Angelic Fallacy (humans have mind without body).

@jetton "So you want to substitute "YOU" for "THOU" in the singular? Motherfucker, not here."

@heidilifeldman Rising fascism is no joke, and we do need to respond to it. I think Heidi puts the emphasis where it belongs: on needs. Our existence takes place in a world of accidents but we ourselves are not accidents but substances. I feel called to make choices between what I want to do, and what I need to do.

@Gargron Disagree. Calling it "artificial intelligence" is absolutely justified. It's only when the qualifier "artificial" is dropped, unknowingly or uncareingly, that interpretive problems arise.

@heidilifeldman All I can fathom is that R. wants a pardon when/if TFG gets back in. Now, a pardon does not mean you're not guilty of the crime you were found guilty of. It just means that your sentence is pardoned. See "Bernie Kerik." As I understand it. If so that seems like a pretty slender reason for R's continuing pretense. Then again, if R comes to Jesus, this would spell trouble for Trump's re-election bid.

@heidilifeldman Nail on head. My take is that the GOP is clinging to Trump like someone on a raft. Trump is now trashing Haley's character, revealing more of his true character (and thus the instability of the raft which the GOP is clinging to).

@robhughes Nice. I really don't get CNN. With what I assume are fabulous newsrooms, they can't be bothered to do a little fact-checking before writing a pop article? Puzzling.

@heidilifeldman The Comstock Act of 1873 made it illegal to send “obscene, lewd or lascivious,” “immoral” or “indecent” publications through the mail.
