The small team of rebel commandos had been sneaking through the Overlord's palace for days. It had started with covertly entering hidden inside a routine delivery of food. They had blocked off parts of the refrigeration units, and hidden themselves there. They could not bring any form of weapon with them, because of the scanners on the palace entrance, and had to be sedated so that their hostile thoughts would not be detected. From there, they had first infiltrated the kitchen staff, and g...

We had this gorgeous #AustralianHobby visit our pine tree. Very cooperative, and gave us plenty of time to take photos. Then it took off to have a disagreement with the Brown Goshawk that has also been hanging around our place. Once that had been seen off, it came back and posed some more! Shot on a #NikonP900 and processed in #Snapseed . #raptor #birding #AustralianBirds #photography #naturephotography #backyardnature #WildOz

The #astronomy group I associate with, #AGWA have a target of the month each month. This month it is #C63 , the #HelixNebula . Now over the past few years I have shot this target a lot. So I am now gathering together *all* my session data, going the Full Tim and stacking it all. I don't know how many hours it is. Lots. Wish me luck! #astrophotography #Astrodon #dwarf3

Here we go. My most ambitious processing to date. The #HelixNebula (aka #C63 , aka #NGC7293 ) is probably the closest planetary nebula to Earth. This image is created from subframes taken with my #Dwarf3 over 2 years and 18 sessions. I started with 4791 frames, 3816 ended up being stacked. A total of over 55 hours of observing time. Most of which I slept through. It took nearly 10 hours to stack inside the telescope itself. In amongst the Ha/OIII frames there is also one 3 hour session of SII...

The piano had been sitting in the train station for years. No one knew when it had arrived there. After the station opened, everyone was sure of that. Felicity was not so sure. She'd been one of the first passengers to use the station, and she was pretty sure it had been there then. And then there was the way the transport authority kept talking about removing it every couple of years. Awould be promptly forgotten about. So she found herself sitting down at it, despite not knowing how to...

#monsterdon #JourneyToTheCenterOfTime1967 And as a bit of #GratuitousSelfPromotion I wrote a time travel story yesterday. https://aus.social/@rdm/117341775415718592

#monsterdon #JourneyToTheCenterOfTime1967 Thank you @miru@social.miyaku.media for the stream and all our friends for the riffs. I've seen this movie about four times now, and for all its flaws it remains one of the better time travel movies out there. Once you put it all together the plot actually works - we had clues in the first couple of scenes about what happened 'later'. But the acting and the pacing ... oof.

Time travel is generally regarded as impossible. This is wrong. Time travel has been invented at least a hundred times since the discovery of electricity. So why don't more people know about it? Well, it is because there is a problem with it. And everyone who discovers it falls for the same trap. In order to travel in time, you need to be able to detach yourself from your local frame of reference. This is easier to achieve than you might think. Once detached, you can travel back a...

Shaman Space Part 5 14 months after leaving Mother of All. In final jump to Mother of All. Sparks and Alaine were in the engine room checking over the engines before exiting jump. It had been a much busier jump than usual, as the Captain and Suri, the navigator, were bringing in the captured raider ship. At least, the crew hoped they were. Once they entered jump, there was no way of communicating or even locating the other ship. "How are you and Seeker holding up?" Sparks asked, wit...

Walter Justin Deanmoore looked at his hotel room. His belongings appeared to be all present, but what was not present was his suitcase. Again. Over the last ten years of near constant travel he had been through eight suitcases, seven travel packs, five trunks, and three duffel bags. All had vanished the day before he was due to check out. All had later surfaced in cities he had never visited and had absolutely watertight alibis for. Which was a very good thing, because each time they had a...

"November Victor Victor Victor, this is Victor Hotel Charlie Seven Bravo, We are seeing some heavy weather ahead. Over." Annika waited for a reply, glancing across at Chika her co-pilot. "Seven Bravo" started the reply, followed by a burst of static and silence. "November Victor Victor Victor say again" Annika sent back. Nothing. "Annika? BOM has a cat four three hundred to our south" Chika's broad Alice Springs accent stronger than usual. "How o...

I do not often plug things. One, I suck at it, two, most things are perfectly good at plugging themselves. For this site, I am making an exception. We all know that there is a lot of horrible stuff going on in the world. And we do need to be informed about it so we can do something about it. But what about the stuff that has had things done about it? We hardly ever hear about that. A few years ago, David Byrne - ex-frontman of Talking Heads, and all-round nice guy, noticed this problem, and...

People often underestimate the power of soundscapes in TV and movies. And I am not talking about background music - I am talking about the actual soundscape built by the foley artists to portray a setting. The sounds of desert winds, the rustling of leaves, the swoosh of long grasses, or the dripping of water in a cave. We only really remember these when they are done wrong. A kookaburra in a South American rainforest, for example will pop any Australian's disbelief suspenders. Done...

It is early in the morning on Sunday, and I am opening the back door to see if there are any ripe lemons on the tree. Instead I almost tread on a fox. Curled up and asleep. Now, you have to understand that ever since Europeans settled here, we have had Japanese immigrants as well. Some by choice, some ... less so. This is why I am not too surprised to see that the fox has three tails. My opening the door has not awakened it, so I step over and continue on to the lemon tree. There are two ri...

@fullfathomfive Live captioning can be very - ah, let's say "creative" at times. It usually gets corrected a few seconds later, but not always. It often makes Question Time especially entertaining.
