@GhostOnTheHalfShell @economics-that-works I would disagree. The real grift is reducing the value of education to narrow labour market ends. When the purpose of HE became simply to cater to the market through unfettered massification - instead of the place one goes to gain very specialised skills for rare jobs and broad critical thinking skills - then the institution runs after the market. The market will always move faster and is unpredictable. Universities will always lose that game.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @economics-that-works Yeah, I get you. But it's all part of the instrumental logic to feed a mythical labour market.

A very big thank you to everyone who participated in the Epistemic Justice Network workshop at the UKFIET Conference in Oxford. Your discussions enriched our insights which we will work on for broader dissemination. The symbolism was not lost on me - discussing epistemic humility and epistemic justice in a room with an old portrait of the Bishop of Calcutta during colonial times and a new portrait of the leading professor, Prof Aditi Lahiri, born in (then) a newly independent Calcutta.

Brilliant week in Bristol. Especially invigorating to present the invited talk, 'Private Education Capital: Beyond Caste-based Educational Exclusion as "Tradition"' at Centre for International Research in Education. I also gave a Roundtable Presentation, 'Epistemic Humility as Experienced Provocation' for doctoral students. Grateful to wonderful colleagues who took such care, asked such thoughtful questions, and showed me beautiful Bristol wi...

Heartbroken, like countless across the world, to have woken up to the news of the passing of Jane Goodall. Her fierce passion and audacious hope in connection and communication across boundaries - human, animal, and otherwise - as the lifeforce is a lesson for us all. I had the privilege of hearing her speak. Filled with incredible wit and compassion, she began her address with the call of a chimpanzee and by thanking her mother. 🤍 In humility and hope.

Wow. I didn't know the history of R, actually, it's co-creator, Emeritus Professor of Statistics, Ross Ihaka, University of Auckland, of Māori descent. A true global public good used by millions. '...he remains modest and bighearted. Always resisting the pressure to commercialize his brainchild.' https://www.historyofdatascience.com/ross-ihaka-the-open-hearted-data-hero/ My team used it to program The Covid-19 School Dashboard, a critical resource during the...

Just to underscore the point, Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo leaving MIT for UZH is probably one of the biggest academic news stories of the year. (Think: Bad-Bunny-level-for-normal-people big.) Even Malala's been ghosted: '"not one of them picked up the phone, or replied to my messages [regarding her pleas to evacuate Afghan partners]. To the men who ran the world, I was just a photo op." [...] She notes, pointedly, that female politicians did.' Deeply reflexive piece on her unrelenting efforts on the right to education. Personal, political, professional. From child activist to global woman leader. At 28 she has done more than most will in ou...
