Hey friends, back in the day, Nagios was the go-to for server/network monitoring. What's the go-to these days? Preferably with ntfy.sh support. Thanks! #sysadmin

I have an absolute boatload to do and deadlines with fines and penalties if I don't get it done, but I've also got a cat cuddling me and she's *so happy*, so I guess I'm paying fines.

David West, just casually demonstrating a solar ignition fire using a friggin' *discarded piece of cling-wrap* and some water. No cuts. No edits. No hype. Just one man who is very devoted to his special interest and is bloody good at it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRuQQeXzdMk #bushcraft #camping #fire

Hello #immich #homelab friends. Looks like a recent update to the onnx runtime adds telemetry back to Microsoft. Because *of course* we cannot have nice things. As far as I can tell, none of this has to do with Immich per se, it's a change to an upstream runtime. To the best of my knowledge, none of the telemetry goes to immich. You can stop the telemetry with: - Adding `ORT_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1` to your `.env` file, and/or - Using pi-hole or another ad-blocking DNS server to intercept and...

Back from survival training in the woods with @DevRhiana@ruby.social. We can now set up emergency shelters from a poncho, get an accurate bearing of true north, and boil a litre of water in under 20 minutes combined¹. Can absolutely recommend the Bushcraft Survival Australia courses². They're legit, and they will *push* you³. For emergency survival in particular you can expect to do things while tired, in the dark, and under time pressure, because real emergencies care not for your comfort...

All my recovered lithium cells are balanced, and they seem to accept the power bank housing I've placed them into. Next step will be to see if they charge, which I do very gently with recovered cells. #reuserepair #18650cell #solarpunk

It's so weird having a dysfunctional brain reward circuit. I guess that's an AuDHD thing? In any case, I've achieved all the goals I set for today, and the result is that I feel no sense of achievement, only tired and icky because all the goals were state bureaucracy related rather than anything I attach personal value to. Or maybe nobody feels good achieving goals they don't personally believe in. Idk.

Hey friends, If you have tech skills—and many of you do—look for ways to reach out to your communities and help them de-enshittify their lives, even if it's just a little. Help them install uBlock Origin. Introduce them to F-Droid. Consider setting up NextCloud or Immich for your family or neighbours. Show them alternatives like DuckDuckGo or Fastmail. If they're on Windows then help move them to Mint¹ or run Win11Debloat². Help them join Mastodon. Talk to your local library or comm...

Woo! New #Immich release with upgraded face-recognition sharing getting very good reviews and feedback. If you've been looking to get your photos off "the cloud" and onto a private, open source service that you host yourself, then now is a really good time. Face sharing has been a bit of a roadblock for a lot of people (especially families), but not any more! https://github.com/immich-app/immich/releases/tag/v3.3.0 #SelfHosted #Homelab #photography #DataSovereignty

Look, I get it, LLMs can't replace *your* expertise, but as a white middle-aged man in tech who is often confidently wrong and taken seriously anyway, they've already mastered the only thing I've ever been good at.

I'm now running navidrome¹ to stream my music collection and it's pretty great. I'm also very grateful that Picard² exists to fill in the metadata on CDs I ripped 20+ years ago. No gratitude to all the AI bots scraping musicbrainz/listenbrainz constantly and ruining things, especially when they could just bulk-download the data legitimately³. — ¹ https://navidrome.org/ ² https://picard.musicbrainz.org/ ³ https://blog.metabrainz.org/2026/08/19/growing-pains-an-update-on-the-listen...

I have absolutely no idea how any country with below-replacement birthrates and an ageing population can argue against immigration, yet still expect the benefits that labour provides, like food availability, trades, and medical care. If we were using a system that prioritised essential jobs over pandering to the rich, then maybe, but instead we have capitalism. (And I know, I know... blaming the immigrants is a way to mislead people so they don't blame the ultra-wealthy, but still...)

Hey #homelab friends, I've been thinking about what would happen if the kids desktops had a hardware failure, and how we might best do backups. Said backups need to happen automatically, need to survive being interrupted, and require no input from the user. I'm considering just putting their entire home directories into a syncthing share with rolling versioning, mirroring to the enterprise storage Linux server we've got in the garage. That should be enough to handle both hardwar...
