To ease the transition for new users, #NetBSD -current now includes an alternative editor to vi(1) and xedit(1) in its base system, atto(1). https://man.netbsd.org/atto.1 It is a modeless screen-based editor similar to nano, pico, xedit, or emacs. It is only 48 kilobytes, making it suitable for inclusion in the rescue system. (This is real, but I'm honestly missing an opportunity by not posting it on 1 April. Let the editor wars commence!)

An HTTPS certificate authority has been compromised. If you want to ensure #NetBSD is not vulnerable, you can run the following commands as root: # certctl untrust /usr/share/certs/mozilla/all/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.pem # certctl untrust /usr/share/certs/mozilla/all/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.pem You can review the untrusted ones with: # certctl untrusted Read more: https://emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/ You can test whether your system is vulnerable by loading the linked pages there. @nev@status.nevillepark.ca we definitely have a 32-bit efi loader, i don't know if it can load a 64-bit kernel though.

Some #NetBSD questions that keep coming up. We don't use modules for HW drivers in the default install. All baked into the kernel. If you're curious about desktop hardware, for x86 there are lists https://wiki.netbsd.org/laptops/ https://wiki.netbsd.org/gpus/ (and the pci/usb manual pages) x86 virtual machines. https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-virt.html#chap-virt-guest For disk encryption there's different options, such as creating a small root with the installer, then ad...

Fun fact: the 2009 model of Sidekick smartphone came with NetBSD as standard. you don't have to wear eyeliner while using one, but it helps ✨

Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD? We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us! Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

Apparently, we get notifications when people add us to collections now. Apparently, someone added us to a collection called "Linux Distros & Desktop Environments", which is of course Deeply Unacceptable.

We gain on average 800 new followers per year, but in the last year (since before Linus made the GenAI-code-in-Linux posts) we gained around 1200. It's great to see the wave of new interest. We're a community that's had 30 years to develop its culture, and things here might work a little bit differently than you expect. But don't let that discourage you from getting involved. This mastodon-account-manager first became a developer in 2018, and it's easily one of the best thin...

It's time to say farewell to the legendary netbsd-9 branch with one final release, NetBSD 9.5. The original 9.0 was released in February 2020. In the meantime, that freshly released NetBSD 11.0 is looking pretty tempting. NetBSD 10.2 will also be released promptly. https://netbsd.org/releases/formal-9/NetBSD-9.5.html

It's been a busy August of NetBSD hacking. Notable changes include faster booting for very slow systems! A new optional script caching mechanism (rcorder_cache=YES) and various long-obsolete services are now disabled by default. The in-kernel cleaner is now used by default for Log File Systems. Support for Realtek/Killer E5000 5 gigabit Ethernet was added. Cursor acceleration was added to the GeForce framebuffer driver. Various disk-related commands were extended to show GPT label names...
