Still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up. Former educator and tech person now back with the Department of Education on the tech/policy/program side. Born and raised in Hawaii. Spent 15 years in Silicon Valley before returning to island life. Loves learning, things that make me laugh hard, taking pictures, my dog, taking pictures of my dog. You get the idea.

Thankful for the weather magics that caused #nolo to stall for many hours before heading west without getting closer to the Big Island. Still quite a bit of wind and rain but it could be so much worse. In our little valley on Oahu, the sustained winds are 31 mph with surprise gusts for fun. I’m sure our neighbors are amused by the small dog and small-ish human trying to stay upright on trips outside. Here is a video of Mochi getting her safe space ready for bed the other night. Not quite sure w...

Hawaii’s 12,600ish public school teachers report to work tomorrow. Students report to school in a week. Sad to see the end of summer traffic drawing to a close. As a 12 month HIDOE employee, I don’t get summer off, but I appreciate the much faster commute. My little corner of Oahu is seeing a drop in the tradewinds and a little bump in the surf due to Hurricane Fausto. #luckywelivehawaii #morningcommute #summer

Started last week with an upset stomach. Ended the week with a ruptured gland. (She is on the mend) Mochi is resigned to Mondog with a cone. #mochislifeishard #Mondog #dogsofmastodon #mastodogs

Picked up mom’s urn yesterday. It was nice to see a little blue sky (even there were a lot of clouds that brought rain later) on our way home. It’s been a month of stormy weather - literally and figuratively. This was a drive mom and I both enjoyed. I’m hoping for some decent weather this weekend so that maybe we can go out for a little drive. Mom’s Alzheimer’s meant that she spent the last 7 years indoors…I’ll bet she’s happy to be free. #luckywelivehawaii #foryoumom #alzheimerssucks

Ridiculously cloudy over east Honolulu but I sat outside to capture these very fuzzy #bloodmoon #lunareclipse photos. #luckywelivehawaii that I could be sitting around in shorts and a t-shirt. #howlingatthemoon

This week feels like it’s been at least three months. Watching a loved one (or anyone, really) slowly slip away is beyond words I have right now. After a midnight dash to mom’s bedside, I had to run home to take care of Mochi. As I made my way back to mom’s bedside I caught the sunrise and was reminded of all the beautiful things I get to see because of mom. ❤️ #luckywelivehawaii #sunrise #sunrisephotography

Last night was the first time in my 56 years I went to bed knowing that my mother was no longer breathing somewhere else on this planet. I didn’t sleep much last night—just a jumble of thoughts and emotions running through me. Fourteen years after Mom’s diagnosis, I thought I was ready for this day, but I was wrong. I could be prepared, but I was never going to be ready. When this morning finally arrived, the best thing I thought I could do was get up to meet the new day. Every ending brings a...
