In July 2024, I reported that Coinbase appeared to be violating campaign finance law by making contributions while holding federal contracts. I filed an FEC complaint alongside Public Citizen. The FEC hasn’t acted. Since, Coinbase has given $60M more and landed another federal contract. https://www.washingtonsun.com/influence/coinbase-marshal-service-contract-political-contributions #Coinbase #USpol #USpolitics

North Korea’s timing was inconsiderate; I’m in the middle of an election night guide to crypto and AI super PAC spending (subscribe to get it before Tuesday!). But I wrote up a primer on the Binance hack, answering questions I’ve gotten about North Korea: https://www.citationneeded.news/its-always-north-korea/ #crypto #cryptocurrency #binance #NorthKorea #DPRK

Updated: Binance estimates its losses at ~$3B+, making this the largest exploit in crypto history — twice the size of 2025’s Bybit hack, now in second place. Binance blames a compromised devops laptop. North Korea, also behind Bybit, is the suspected culprit. https://www.citationneeded.news/binance-theft/ #binance #crypto #cryptocurrency

I wrote up what we know about the Binance hack so far. By my best estimate, Binance is out $1.5–$3 billion after stablecoin issuers froze what they could. Changpeng Zhao is promising Binance will cover it, but he’s legally barred from running the company. https://www.citationneeded.news/binance-theft/ #binance #crypto #cryptocurrency

It looks like Binance is getting drained right now, across multiple hot wallets, for $2B and counting. Pretty normal for exchanges to migrate wallets, NOT normal for them to then swap to Tether and dump

Last week, I went on Meidas Defense to talk about crypto as a national security problem. Sanctioned states’ crypto receipts are up almost 700%. i’ve been writing about crypto for a while now, but this new addition to the $TRUMP memecoin website fine print may be the most blatant “lol you suckers are our exit liquidity” i’ve seen so far (CIC Digital is just a shell company Trump uses for the $TRUMP memecoin and some other projects; it’s wholly owned by Trump’s revocable trust) #crypto #cryptocurrency

The Clarity Act cloture vote has failed by a 49–50 margin; well short of the 60 votes needed. No Democrats crossed over to vote for the bill, and three Republicans voted against. Senator Collins’ (R-ME) NO vote on Clarity was the most surprising today. She was defending the bill to constituents as recently as last week. My guess is she did not believe the bill had a chance to pass, and was more worried about defending a yes vote as her re-election prospects look slimmer. #crypto #cryptocurrenc...
