I wonder, if you priced out replacing every single car in the USA with an electric one (assuming Chinese prices), if it would cost more or less than "generative AI" and the AI data center buildout

Every OSS project maintainer I hear from is like "we can't ban AI because it's an unenforceable policy. There's literally no way of knowing whether something is written by AI" and every OSS project contributor I hear from is like "yeah, contributing is really miserable because I'm so busy reviewing this PRs and every single one is so obviously AI"

Okay so the hilarious thing is, one year ago I wanted to use Linux as a desktop operating system, so I was really angry Wayland was not designed to enable writing GUI applications for Linux. Wayland seems to have been designed as a kind of super-EGL, a surface negotiation protocol for embedded touchscreen devices. Now one year later I want to get Linux off my computer at any cost and I'm going hmmm so you're saying your surface negotiation protocol has NO Linux baggage…? https://app.waf...

I wonder if a sufficiently good smartgrid could TEMPEST sidechannel deduce things out of a computer plugged into it. Like maybe decryption produces noticeable signals in tiny-fraction-of-second power draw to such an extent it starts to seem plausible you can gradually derive keys from it

Awhile back on Bluesky there was discourse when someone made the (verifiably false) claim "cyberpunk" was coined before "punk" was redefined from "criminal"/"delinquent" to "cool"/"artistic". I am still thinking about how this claim, if true, would change the word "Solarpunk". What does it mean to be a solar-powered criminal. Not an ecoterrorist but a small-time hood. Do you steal batteries from Flock cameras to power mesh ne...

The key advantage of AI code assistants is they allow you to increase velocity. Velocity, of course, being the worst possible thing a software project can have, from the user's perspective. https://mastodon.online/@codechimp/117495289268759476

Does anyone know how in heck the I file a bug on a *specific* Firefox component in Bugzilla? I believe there used to be a button for this, but in the new filing interface I cannot for the life of me find it. "Change" only brings me back to the "Firefox, or Thunderbird"? screen. A Mozilla team member has asked me to file some bugs on a specific component but I only seem to be able to put them in Untriaged. Afterwards I can *edit* them into a particular componen...

Personally I think the Internet is extremely good, and it is television that is bad. The Internet only got bad when people from The Television moved in and started using it. https://tenforward.social/@nivex/117486661160031283

Hey so uhhh Would you happen to have a thing called the "NVidia App" installed on your computer? If so, you might want to open it up, go to Settings, and uncheck "Allow AI Agents to Control NVidia App". This checkbox will be on by default if you have not specifically turned it off.

So this one datacenter in Russia got bombed by Ukraine and caused a Yandex outage. And I have seen people posting data-backed analyses showing this has resulted in a drop in net traffic from certain scraper bot networks; and I've seen people making *jokes* that this will show up in drops of coordinated inauthentic activity on websites such as "X" [Twitter]. But I haven't seen any attempts to analyze with hard data whether social media activity changed during this particular dat...

I believe that at some point in the next ten years, a "brain computer interface" will exist that detects some kind of neuron activity, runs it through a machine learning model, and translates it into LLM agent actions. It won't be anything as clean as "you think a sentence and it types it". It will be something one level lower than "prompting an AI". You do some vague mental thing and it translates into a result on the computer. I believe this product will not...
