I still follow a couple people who have fallen into the AI psychosis. I keep meaning to unfollow, but I procrastinate. It is painful, but it is also darkly fascinating, to watch humans I once respected deteriorate, making less and less sense, first to a place where I no longer respect anything they say, and eventually to a place where I no longer understand anything they say. I’ve never (yet) experienced a loved one going through Alzheimers or dementia, and none of the people I’m talking about...

@lzg i too work in datacenters sometimes, but they’re all like, in the basement of a building that is mostly offices, or mostly classrooms, or mostly a library which seems perfect?? like why build a building like an entire building that is nothing but a drain, rarely with human staff, basically an anti-power plant

@lzg yeah it’s such a weird thing to hear about whatever 1000X DATACENTER some dickhead says they’ll build, and sure i’m against that but like, all the sudden “datacenters are bad” rhetoric is more than a little dissonant, since they’re like, a pretty good and established way to address a straightforward need? but again i realize i’m talking about the utility of 2-lane county roads in a conversation that now includes 18-lane freeways in the middle of downtown and with no linguistic distinction

@jwz Following you because thank you for writing that "don't talk to me about AI" card. I've shared it (or censored versions of it) with a few people I know, and some of them have started getting introspective. [edit: oof, "censored" was a really poor choice of word on my part—I put it in my own words and I cite the original]

I like #ZigLang so far, but I find the aversion to inheritance irritating. I understand that people feel burned by all the problems that come from misusing the feature—but it feels childish to me when a language refuses outright. Looking past that, I think I like the way it handles memory allocation. It feels powerful and intuitive, yet safe, in a way that rust never really managed for me.

i am a patient man, but my capacity for patience regarding still having wisdom teeth continues to outweigh my capacity for patience regarding insurance web page ux (note: not actually—i am pretty sure i figured out how to get my employer to pay for some of the procedure, but also, due to the ux, i will not know for sure for a few weeks) (all i am saying is that this website was clearly designed by someone with a malevolent attitude toward humanity in general, that is all i want to convey)

I'm logging 3 different types of conversation people using AI try to have with me. "I am so high right now""Please acknowledge that I am just as smart while huffing paint as I am while sober""I know gambling is not the best but yesterday I thought I'd hit the slots, and first it was seven-seven-apple, then banana-cherries-apple, and then seven-banana-apple—and I know I shouldn't read into it but isn't that interesting??"

it takes a good online community to start with the premise "gimp should be called something else" and it takes a truly wonderful online community to conclude "gimp should be renamed 'photoshop for sluts'"
